{"id":77638,"date":"2020-06-15T11:19:30","date_gmt":"2020-06-15T10:19:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=77638"},"modified":"2020-06-15T11:19:30","modified_gmt":"2020-06-15T10:19:30","slug":"covid-19-testing-construction-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/covid-19-testing-construction-2\/77638\/","title":{"rendered":"CIOB calls for Covid-19 testing station on all major construction sites"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciob.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chartered Institute of Building<\/a> (CIOB) has called on the government to set up Covid-19 testing stations on major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-sites-2\/77485\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">construction sites<\/a> around the UK<\/h2>\n<p>Covid-19 testing stations would ensure any outbreaks are tracked and traced as quickly as possible, enabling construction to bounce back quickly and safely.<\/p>\n<p>The CIOB\u2019s proposal to integrate major British construction sites into the recently launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/nhs-test-and-trace-how-it-works\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NHS Test and Trace system<\/a>, to enable the regular testing of workers without risking further transmission of the virus, comes in the institute\u2019s recent submission to a consultation on Covid-19 recovery by the <a href=\"https:\/\/committees.parliament.uk\/committee\/365\/business-energy-and-industrial-strategy-committee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>CIOB&#8217;s recommendation on embedded test centres is one of a number of measures proposed by the institute to help get the industry back on its feet as the country recovers from Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>With over 86% of construction sites in England and Wales open, there is a significant opportunity to locate Covid-19 testing stations on \u2013 or in close proximity to \u2013 some of the UK\u2019s major construction sites.<\/p>\n<h3>Facilitating national recovery<\/h3>\n<p>CIOB said: &#8220;The construction industry is set to play a key role in restarting the economy and facilitating national recovery, and it is, therefore, crucial that the industry receives the support it needs to return to work and cope with the ongoing impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThought must be given to the immediate challenges around resuming construction work, as well as the long-term need for a stable pipeline of future work and the retention of the sector\u2019s skills base.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Helping the sector bounce back<\/h3>\n<p>Eddie Tuttle, director of policy, research &amp; public affairs at CIOB, commented: \u201cConstruction workers are increasingly returning to sites all around the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are urging the government to fully integrate construction sites into the new NHS Test and Trace System so construction workers won\u2019t need to travel to get regular tests, risking further transmission of the virus in the process.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This will help the construction sector \u2013 which is a vital part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/covid-19-economy-recovery\/76193\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UK economy<\/a> \u2013 to get back to full strength with confidence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will also help improve public trust in the sector, which has been battling to keep essential infrastructure projects moving.
