{"id":77810,"date":"2020-06-17T14:53:11","date_gmt":"2020-06-17T13:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=77810"},"modified":"2020-06-17T14:53:11","modified_gmt":"2020-06-17T13:53:11","slug":"zero-carbon-for-zero-cost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/zero-carbon-for-zero-cost\/77810\/","title":{"rendered":"Mitie launches zero carbon service to drive green recovery"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The &#8216;Zero Carbon for Zero Cost&#8217; service builds on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mitie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mitie\u2019s<\/a> own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/plan-zero-carbon-2025\/72173\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plan Zero commitment<\/a> to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2025, 15 years ahead of the UK government\u2019s target<\/h2>\n<p>Mitie&#8217;s &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/plan-zero-carbon-2025\/72173\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plan Zero<\/a>&#8216; focuses on three pillars:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eliminating carbon emissions from power and transport<\/li>\n<li>Eradicating non-sustainable waste<\/li>\n<li>Enhancing inefficient buildings to meet the highest environmental standards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As the nation prepares to get Britain back to business and lockdown restrictions begin to ease, organisations across the UK are considering how they can prepare for a \u2018new normal\u2019 way of operating.<\/p>\n<p>To support those planning a return to workplaces, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mitie.com\/all-services\/energy-carbon\/?filter-service=energy-carbon&amp;filter-search=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mitie Energy<\/a> has launched a new Zero Carbon for Zero Cost service to help businesses drive a green recovery, as part of its Plan Zero commitment to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/water-industry-net-zero-carbon\/72875\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reach net-zero carbon<\/a> emissions by 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses are likely to face increasing budget pressures, Zero Carbon for Zero Cost has been developed to support organisations with ambitious net-zero carbon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/energy-performance-targets\/65028\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emissions targets<\/a> that have limited budgets to upgrade, replace or install new assets.<\/p>\n<p>The service focuses on demonstrating the cost savings of investments, choosing efficient solutions with a prompt quick payback and affordable funding options. This approach means that over their lifetime, carbon saving solutions often come at zero cost to the business.<\/p>\n<h3>These solutions include:<\/h3>\n<h4>Modernising HVAC, electrical and lighting systems<\/h4>\n<p>Outdated systems use more energy, especially assets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/bsria-smart-connected-hvac\/54427\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">such as HVAC<\/a>, lighting and electrics. Upgrading to more efficient systems saves energy and reduces carbon emissions. Connecting these assets to a building management system (BMS) allows for them to be monitored remotely to ensure they are working to optimum levels.<\/p>\n<h4>Decarbonising power<\/h4>\n<p>Upgrading fossil fuel boilers to renewable heating solutions or generating electricity through renewable sources will cut carbon emissions and save on energy costs. Systems such as ground source heat pumps can save enough energy to cover their cost in just five years.<\/p>\n<h4>Renewable energy battery storage solutions<\/h4>\n<p>Generating electricity on-site with a renewable source such as solar or wind not only supports decarbonisation but also reduces energy supply risk.<\/p>\n<p>Connecting renewable power generation with battery storage adds resilience, ensuring the site is powered 24\/7.<\/p>\n<h4>Carbon strategy and compliance<\/h4>\n<p>Complex environmental reporting and compliance can add cost. Support from sustainability and compliance experts supports quicker reporting, while billing teams ensure energy costs are always accurate and provide the best value.<\/p>\n<p>Through carbon reduction projects such as these, including upgrading assets, efficient lighting, ground source heat pumps and renewable energy systems, Mitie saved 100,000 tonnes of CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions for customers in FY 19\/20.<\/p>\n<h3>A clean recovery<\/h3>\n<p>Carlo Alloni, managing director, technical services and integrated facilities management, Mitie, said: \u201cWe\u2019ve all seen the positive effect that lockdown has had on our environment, however, as restrictions begin easing so will these benefits.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As companies get back to business and we all adjust to a new normal, now is an ideal time to ensure that green thinking is leading the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-roadmap-to-recovery\/76951\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UK\u2019s economic recovery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo meet ambitious net-zero carbon commitments every business must ensure carbon reduction is at the centre of their plans to help fuel a green, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/a-greener-future-for-the-post-covid-19-office-space\/76919\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">clean recovery in the UK<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile many business leaders may think prioritising carbon will be expensive, it doesn\u2019t need to cost the earth.
