search for a specialist contractor to deliver 230km of telecommunications systems which will connect the rail link between London, Birmingham and the north of England<\/h2>\n<p>The winner of the telecommunications systems contract \u2013 worth around \u00a3300m \u2013 will be responsible for the design, manufacture, supply, installation, safety authorisation, testing, commissioning and initial maintenance of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/signalling-systems-hs2\/76288\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">operational systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The winner will also route wide security systems on Phase One and 2a, between London and Crewe.<\/p>\n<p>The scope of the work includes 2,760 km of fibre optic cabling, 140 trackside cabinets, dozens of equipment cabins and radio coverage across 230km, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Data transmission network<\/li>\n<li>Operational telephony system<\/li>\n<li>Tunnel radio system<\/li>\n<li>GSM-R radio network, including base transmission stations, antenna, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Relocatable equipment buildings<\/li>\n<li>Route wide security systems<\/li>\n<li>Passive provision for Airwave.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The winning bidder will also provide a separate contract for the provision of technical support services.<\/p>\n<p>HS2 Ltd\u2019s procurement and commercial director, David Poole said: \u201cHS2\u2019s operational telecoms systems will be the railway\u2019s communications backbone \u2013 linking up the men and women who will run the railway and stretching across 230km of bridges, tunnels, stations, depots and other facilities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It will play a vital role in keeping everyone safe and ensuring we can deliver fast, reliable and frequent services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look forward to our team working with the suppliers who come forward and together ensuring that we deliver best quality and value for the project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Separate contract opportunities \u2013 expected to be announced next year \u2013 will cover third party communications including mobile phone coverage for passengers on trains and in stations, WiFi and an emergency services network.<\/p>\n<p>The telecommunications systems contractor will be expected to take a leading role in the managing of interfaces between the telecommunications and other contracts.<\/p>\n<h3>INWED 2020<\/h3>\n<p>As part of International <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/women-in-engineering-day\/58871\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women in Engineering Day<\/a> 2020\u00a0(23 June), HS2 has also called on women to help build the infrastructure project.<\/p>\n<p>Kate Myers, HS2 Ltd head of skills, employment and\u00a0education, said: \u201cAt HS2 we\u2019ve always been focused on addressing the issue of an ageing workforce in railway engineering and construction, a workforce traditionally dominated by men.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re determined to become a global leader in the sector and export our skills in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/hs2-survey-2\/75559\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high speed rail<\/a> and engineering excellence, and more
