Institute<\/a> (RTPI) has today (29 June) announced a national campaign calling on the government to capitalise on the expertise of planners to achieve a sustainable, resilient and inclusive recovery from the pandemic<\/h2>\n<p>\u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtpi.org.uk\/news\/plan-the-world-we-need\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plan the World We Need<\/a>\u2019, launched by RTPI president Sue Manns at the institute\u2019s annual conference, aims to raise awareness of the vital role planners have in every aspect the recovery, including reviving the economy, tackling inequality and meeting net-zero targets by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign was launched alongside a report, &#8216;Plan The World We Need: The contribution of planning to a sustainable, resilient and inclusive recovery&#8217;,<em>\u00a0<\/em>and a short film by RTPI president, Sue Manns, at the institute\u2019s annual conference, Planner Live.<\/p>\n<h3>Committee on Climate Change<\/h3>\n<p>The RTPI\u2019s campaign is in line with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/covid-global-climate-crisis\/78159\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">findings from the Committee on Climate Change<\/a>, which this week published its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theccc.org.uk\/publication\/reducing-uk-emissions-2020-progress-report-to-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2020 report to Parliament<\/a>\u00a0assessing progress on reducing UK emissions over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>The paper highlights five clear investment priorities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Low carbon retrofits and buildings that are fit for the future<\/li>\n<li>Tree planting, peatland restoration and green infrastructure<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening of energy networks<\/li>\n<li>Infrastructure to make it easy for people to walk, cycle and work remotely<\/li>\n<li>Moves towards a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/circular-economy-construction\/74449\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">circular economy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As part of the campaign, which will initially run for six months, the RTPI will engage with policymakers, Parliamentarians and wider stakeholders in all four countries of the UK and in Ireland.<\/p>\n<h3>Ensuring focus on sustainable construction<\/h3>\n<p>Sue Manns said: \u201cThe Covid-19 pandemic has brought into sharp focus the strengths and weaknesses of our places and our way of life and it is now vital that we plan a greener, place-based recovery that responds not only to the lessons learned from the pandemic but also to the challenges that we were grappling with long before covid, most notably climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernments must capitalise on the expertise of spatial planners to tackle place-based inequality, enable a green industrial revolution, prioritise healthy and sustainable modes of transport and coordinate the rapid deployment of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/zero-carbon-for-zero-cost\/77810\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">zero-carbon infrastructure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether we must ensure the renewed focus on sustainable and active travel, the reduction of pollution levels and the increased use of digital technology, seen during lockdown, is sustained alongside an economic recovery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in PMQs earlier this month: \u2018The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/calls-for-green-recovery\/77188\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">green recovery<\/a> is going to be essential to this country\u2019s success in the next few years.\u2019 The RTPI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/boost-uk-infrastructure\/73030\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">calls on governments<\/a> to fully utilise
