{"id":78652,"date":"2020-07-03T09:16:11","date_gmt":"2020-07-03T08:16:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=78652"},"modified":"2020-07-03T09:16:11","modified_gmt":"2020-07-03T08:16:11","slug":"besa-new-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/besa-new-president\/78652\/","title":{"rendered":"BESA elects new president for 2020\/21"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebesa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Building Engineering Services Association<\/a> (BESA) has appointed Neil Brackenridge as president for 2020\/21, he succeeds John Norfolk of Imtech Engineering Services<\/h2>\n<p>Neil Brackenridge is MEP regional director of Midlands &amp; North at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wates.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wates Group<\/a>. He was chair of the BESA North West region from 2017 to 2019 and has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebesa.com\/media\/836595\/besa-ed-com-skills-partnership-strategy-2018-2023-feb-2019-v1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BESA National Education Committee and Skills Partnership<\/a> chair since 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Brackenridge has a long and distinguished career in the sector, having also worked for Imtech, CHt, SES and Rosser &amp; Russell after commencing his career as a craft apprentice with Crown House Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>He was also recognised and chosen as the Principle Winner of the HVCA Alfred Manly Award in 2002.<\/p>\n<h3>Not quite \u2018business as usual\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Brackenridge said it was vital that the industry did not go back to \u201cbusiness as usual\u201d following the current Covid-19 crisis and called for contractors to harness the \u201cunity of purpose\u201d displayed during the pandemic to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/changes-the-building-services\/75923\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">create a better future<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new BESA president acknowledges that the sector faced a challenging time as buildings were gradually brought back into use after the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Brackenridge said: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/young-people-in-construction\/73265\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Young people<\/a> will be more inclined towards careers in building engineering if they see us making a difference in this way and working together for the greater good.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoung people have been disproportionately impacted by the crisis and we are in danger of losing yet another cohort of apprentices. Employers must reflect on this and recognise that we will need this new generation to help us rebuild. Restarting the economy means restarting its buildings, but that presents a series of challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing into the lockdown was relatively straightforward \u2013 getting out of it is proving complicated \u2013 not least the technical challenges involved in safely re-opening buildings and rebooting their services;
