By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/aec-delta-mobility\/76849\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">collaborating and sharing data<\/a>, CDE is a clear and concise way for companies to be organised and for progress on BIM and construction projects to be seen.<\/p>\n<p>CDE is a single source for information, it creates a facility where members from every team can access and add to the project.<\/p>\n<h3>CDE compromises of four main parts, including:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Work in progress<\/li>\n<li>Shared<\/li>\n<li>Published<\/li>\n<li>Archive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>CDE in practice<\/h3>\n<p>Using a CDE is not a new concept, but a tried and tested approach to the built environment. Recently, Laing O\u2019Rourke began using Asite\u2019s CDE to lead the clean-up following the devastating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/common-data-environment-2\/76119\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bushfires across New South Wales<\/a> in Australia. The use of CDE in the bushfire clean-up allowed team members from across the project to locate, edit and manage the data in one shared location.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Heathrow Airport put CDE at the centre of its Information Management strategy. Excitech were appointed to a 7-year contract to lead a consortium for Heathrow Airport, using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.groupbc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GroupBC<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Autodesk\u2019s<\/a> CDE solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, GroupBC\u2019s CDE software was chosen to be the core source of organisation and information for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/cde-birmingham-airport\/71757\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Birmingham Airport expansion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Stuart Bell, sales &amp; marketing director at GroupBC, said: \u201cGroupBC\u2019s CDE is widely used in the owner-operator space due to its industry-leading modern interface, rapid deployment and fast return on investment.<\/p>\n<h3>CDE and BIM compliance<\/h3>\n<p>A common data environment adheres to guidelines outlined in the PAS 1192 and BS 1192 documentation. These guidelines highlight what needs to be done to achieve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/bim-level-2\/76492\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BIM Level 2<\/a> compliance on projects.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the PAS series, PAS 1192 reveals the set of requirements for achieving BIM Level 2 in the construction industry. The PAS documents aim to establish a framework for collaborative working and information requirements.<\/p>\n<p>BS 1192 details the method for the development, organisation, and management of information. It outlines a stringent process for collaboration and a specified naming policy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asite.com\/blogs\/what-is-a-common-data-environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Asite defines this as<\/a>: \u201cBIM Level 2 compliance requires projects to work collaboratively and a process by which project members can manage the information specific to their project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis collaboration also needs to be coordinated between various systems and project participants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, in order to work within a BIM-enabled environment, a CDE should be a main priority for the project team.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Content ownership of CDE<\/h3>\n<p>When it comes to the data shared in a CDE, it is important to remember who owns the content shared. The party who provide the data own their own content.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenbs.com\/knowledge\/what-is-the-common-data-environment-cde\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Richard McPartland, editor of theNBS, said<\/a>: \u201cTypically team members will licence their contributions for use by the client for a prescribed purpose (ie. generating the federated model to the level of detail contractually set out in Employer&#8217;s Information Requirements).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn turn, clients can then licence the range of models\u00a0fed\u00a0back to the\u00a0CDE\u00a0for use by other members of the project team for their requirements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOwnership may change as the project progresses and decisions are made \u2013 objects specified by the designer, for example, will be swopped out by sub-contractor(s) with particular manufacturer&#8217;s objects, for example. The information manager must be mindful of these changes of status.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Why it matters<\/h3>\n<p>Joan Allen, product lead, construction records center of excellence at Autodesk wrote about the challenges faced in using a CDE and how to overcome these.<\/p>\n<p>In the Autodesk feature, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/constructionblog.autodesk.com\/common-data-environment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">What\u2019s a Common Data Environment and Why It Matters<\/a>\u2019, Allen said: \u201cUnfortunately, many teams struggle to manage and disperse information effectively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe poor management that inevitably results for companies that don\u2019t have a system in place can lead to errors, rework, missed deadlines, cost overruns, bruised feelings,\u00a0and even litigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea of a common data environment is quite appealing, but the reality of what most construction teams are working with can be less than ideal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany existing challenges make the execution of projects on-time and on-budget, without\u00a0siloing\u00a0and with seamless collaboration across niches, more challenging to achieve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Allen identifies the following points as reasons to adopt a common data environment:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Enhanced collaboration:<\/strong> If used correctly, digital technologies have the ability to improve collaboration. That means\u00a0that all project data and information\u00a0needs\u00a0to flow\u00a0into and be updated\u00a0in one\u00a0centralized system. This leads to improved coordination and teamwork, both internally and across teams.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Creates a single source of truth:\u00a0<\/strong>One reliable place for team members to access real-time plans, changes, and data\u00a0leads to better decision-making and insight across projects and even\u00a0company-wide.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Improves efficiency and quality:\u00a0<\/strong>Common data environments reduce the need to manually recreate data, which leads to reduced input errors and lost information.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lowers risk: <\/strong>A CDE lowers risk with better transparency and insight into the entire project landscape. Over time, this enables continuous improvement and predictability.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strengthens security:\u00a0<\/strong>With a CDE, administrators and IT professionals have better control of data and information, creating more security.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>She concludes: \u201cA common data environment sets your businesses and projects up for success today by allowing your team to optimise and utilise the information when it matters most.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdopt a common data environment to ensure that your approach to projects and collaboration remains strong from design through operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, in 2016, Adrian Burgess, technical director at PCSG wrote about why CDE doesn\u2019t have to be a complicated solution in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/demystifying-common-data-environment\/26133\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his article for PBC Today<\/a>, said: \u201cEvery client and every project are different;
