Kier<\/a> has been appointed by Swansea Council<\/a> to deliver a multi-million pound modernisation and expansion programme at Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr<\/h2>\n

When complete, Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr will provide 200 additional school places.<\/p>\n

To celebrate the start of construction, Kier alongside members of the council, governors and teachers, held a socially distanced turf cutting at the site in Gowerton.<\/p>\n

All works will be carried out in line with current Welsh Government<\/a> guidance and in compliance with Kier\u2019s Site Operating Procedures<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Kier will work with the school and local community to carry out works in a considerate manner in order to cause minimal disruption to its pupils and teachers together with the local community.<\/p>\n

Construction phases<\/h3>\n

As part of the first phase of this project, a new teaching block will be constructed and will be ready before the start\u00a0of the 2021\/22 academic year. The two-storey building will have first-class facilities, including general teaching\u00a0classrooms, a new kitchen, canteen and drama hall.<\/p>\n

Phase two will modernise and transform the school\u2019s existing drama studio and kitchen to provide enhanced teaching spaces. This is due for completion in Winter 2021.<\/p>\n

Procured through the South West Wales Regional Contractor Framework<\/a>, Kier will work with a local supply chain to deliver this project and last month, Kier, Swansea Council and Business Wales arranged a virtual meet the buyer event with local suppliers from surrounding areas of Swansea and other parts of West Wales.<\/p>\n

Time to extend and modernise<\/h3>\n

Jason Taylor, operations director for Kier Regional Building Western & Wales, said: \u201cWe are delighted to be working with Swansea Council, Welsh Government and the team at Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr to extend and modernise parts of this school.<\/p>\n

“We will draw on our vast experience within the education sector<\/a> to deliver these facilities and offer pupils a learning environment that is modern, vibrant and engaging.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is hugely important to us that we use a local supply chain for this project and as we continue to socially distance, we will adhere to all Government guidance and operate in line with our site operating procedures.<\/p>\n

“Throughout our time at the school we will engage with pupils by holding talks virtually and provide activities that put the disciplines of STEM into action. We look forward to delivering this project for the Swansea community.\u201d<\/p>\n
