{"id":79553,"date":"2020-07-20T10:30:32","date_gmt":"2020-07-20T09:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=79553"},"modified":"2020-07-20T10:30:58","modified_gmt":"2020-07-20T09:30:58","slug":"southampton-affordable-homes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/southampton-affordable-homes\/79553\/","title":{"rendered":"Southampton commits to hundreds of new affordable homes"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Southampton City Council<\/a> has approved plans to deliver hundreds of much-needed new affordable homes worth an estimated \u00a3144m<\/h2>\n<p>The plans will see hundreds of much-needed affordable homes delivered across the city in an investment programme worth an estimated \u00a3144m.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing housing demand in the city, the council will deliver 100% affordable living in a combination of social, affordable and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/shared-ownership-housing-crisis\/67598\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shared ownership schemes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The council will use a mix of funding streams to pay for the homes, including borrowing, income from the Right to Buy scheme and shared ownership properties, plus grants.<\/p>\n<p>Potential development sites for the homes have been identified and these will be disclosed as planning and design stages develop.<\/p>\n<h3>The decision marks the start of the next phase in the council\u2019s plans to:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Bridge the gap between the need for and provision of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/affordable-homes-key-workers\/77963\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">affordable homes<\/a> in the city<\/li>\n<li>Provide homes for Southampton\u2019s most vulnerable residents<\/li>\n<li>Create new jobs, apprenticeships and investment in the local construction industry<\/li>\n<li>Give tenants access, through the Housing Revenue Account, to secure tenancies<\/li>\n<li>Help people own their homes through the shared ownership schemes<\/li>\n<li>Address the reduction of the council\u2019s housing stock through Right to Buy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The affordable homes will also reflect new aspirations and homes standards (including supporting the council\u2019s Green City Charter and meeting the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge), which are set out in a new Homes Design Manual. The document will help steer designers and developers as they work with the council to deliver sustainable, quality and lifestyle-appropriate homes \u2013 also known as the Southampton Home.<\/p>\n<p>In total, the next phase of the approved programme will deliver 726 homes and support the creation of 1,089 jobs. Each of the individual schemes will now be developed in detail and local communities and other organisations close to the sites will have the opportunity to comment on the proposals and the Homes Design Manual.<\/p>\n<h3>Investing in homes that Southampton people need<\/h3>\n<p>Councillor Satvir Kaur, cabinet member for homes and culture at Southampton City Council, said: \u201cWe are in a national <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/modular-construction-news\/modular-homes-social-housing\/73300\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">housing crisis<\/a>, where too many people struggle to find a home that is affordable and adequate for their needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why Southampton City Council is investing in homes that Southampton people need, which is good news for local residents and our local economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis programme will deliver the next generation of council housing, with a real focus on affordability, design and energy efficiency, because we know a quality home leads to a better quality of life. I look forward to working with local communities to deliver this ambitious programme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Christopher Hammond, leader of Southampton City Council, added: \u201cThis is the boldest council home building programme in a generation. It will not only deliver quality, affordable and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/building-eco-friendly-on-a-budget\/38458\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sustainable homes<\/a>, but also boost our local economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur \u00a3144m programme will inject \u00a378m into supply chains and create over 1,000 much needed jobs.
