{"id":79582,"date":"2020-07-20T12:42:13","date_gmt":"2020-07-20T11:42:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=79582"},"modified":"2020-07-20T12:42:13","modified_gmt":"2020-07-20T11:42:13","slug":"tata-steel-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/tata-steel-jobs\/79582\/","title":{"rendered":"GMB holds urgent talks to protect jobs at Tata Steel"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Reports during the weekend suggested that Tata Steel plans to shut two blast furnaces and replace them with electric arc furnaces, leading to thousands of job losses in the UK<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmb.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GMB<\/a>, the steelworkers\u2019 union, is holding urgent talks with Tata Steel over the growing fears of job losses.<\/p>\n<p>Ross Murdoch, GMB national officer, said: &#8220;We spoke to Tata Steel senior management over the weekend to discuss these reports. The company will be arranging a meeting of the UK Steel Committee as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At this meeting, GMB and sister steel unions will be seeking a response and clarification from the company.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Through our regular meetings with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-business-energy-and-industrial-strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BEIS<\/a>, GMB has become aware some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/steel-frame-construction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">steel companies<\/a> have sought Government support as they navigate their way through the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;GMB will fight to protect our members&#8217;
