The government<\/a> has released an update for the Crossrail project, confirming that Network Rail requires an extra \u00a3140m of funding as station and power upgrade work takes longer than planned<\/h2>\n

The 2020 update for the Crossrail project outlines the actions, challenges, achievements, funding and finances for the scheme.<\/p>\n

The statement revealed that Network Rail\u2019s programme requires an extra \u00a3140m of funding with the cost of the surface works package now standing at just under \u00a33bn. The additional costs \u201care the result of some station and power upgrade work taking longer than planned\u201d.<\/p>\n

The main Crossrail budget of \u00a318bn is also expected to rise as Covid-19 delays<\/a> take effect.<\/p>\n

Recovery plan<\/h3>\n

The statement said: \u201cWorks have now restarted as part of Crossrail\u2019s recovery plan with sites operating within the framework of Public Health England\u2019s safety guidelines, with\u00a0CRL\u00a0intensely focussed on achieving the next key programme milestone \u2013 commencement of the intensive testing of the railway, known as \u2018trial running\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cCRL\u00a0are currently in the process of updating their cost and schedule forecasts<\/a> in light of their recovery plan, including assessing the impact on their opening schedule and will make a further update on this shortly.\u201d<\/p>\n

It added: \u201cThe department will continue to work with its joint sponsor,\u00a0TfL, to closely scrutinise the project, supporting its delivery as soon as is safely possible and to deliver the vital assurance and safety certification that is required before passenger services can commence.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe department will also work with\u00a0TfL\u00a0to oversee the effective review and evolution of Crossrail\u2019s future governance<\/a> arrangements to make sure the right decisions are taken as the project moves towards completion, and that it successfully transitions to\u00a0TfL\u00a0operations as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Total funding for the Crossrail project from July 2008 to May 2020 hit just over \u00a314bn.<\/p>\n
