recovery<\/h2>\n<p>Sadiq Khan announced a package of infrastructure works worth up to \u00a31.5bn to help kick-start London\u2019s economic recovery from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/covid-19-construction-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Covid-19 crisis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The London Recovery Board \u2013 led by Khan and councillor Peter John, the chair of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.londoncouncils.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">London Councils<\/a> \u2013 met to discuss long-term measures to enable London\u2019s social and economic recovery post-Covid, including a plan to join forces with utility companies on the mayor\u2019s London Infrastructure Group.<\/p>\n<p>The partnership will progress projects to\u00a0support the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/plan-for-jobs\/78958\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">green recovery and jobs<\/a>, helping to counteract Covid-19\u2019s damaging impact on the economy.<\/p>\n<h3>Projects include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Upgrading the gas network to improve the security of London\u2019s gas supplies.<\/li>\n<li>Reducing water leakage by 20% and pollution incidents by 30% by 2025.<\/li>\n<li>Progressing plans to increase the resilience of the water supply network serving boroughs in north east London; the City and Canary Wharf.<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring the electricity infrastructure is in place to support electric vehicles, using innovative planning tools to identify the best charger locations and timings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Companies including <a href=\"https:\/\/cadentgas.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cadent<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssen.co.uk\/Home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scottish &amp; Southern Electricity Networks<\/a> (SSEN), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sgn.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SGN<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UK Power Networks<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thameswater.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thames Water<\/a> are working with City Hall and London\u2019s local authorities to also identify new green schemes.<\/p>\n<p>The companies will also accelerate future investment, by providing new jobs that meet the mayor\u2019s aim for London to be a fairer, more equal, greener and resilient city post-Covid.<\/p>\n<p>Some projects may require additional regulatory approval to ensure value for money and affordability, and the board has stated its commitment to working with utilities, the government and regulators to progress the case for additional investments that will\u00a0boost London\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the board has committed to support utility companies in identifying employment opportunities, especially for young people and Londoners from Black, Asian and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/racial-equality-workplace\/79690\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">minority ethnic backgrounds<\/a> who have been disproportionately affected by the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Once the specific infrastructure works projects have been identified and agreed, they will be delivered with the support of the mayor\u2019s Infrastructure Coordination Service.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Stimulate our economy\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said:\u00a0\u201cThe effects of the Covid-19 pandemic have been devastating for our economy and we face a long road ahead, but the London Recovery Board has made great progress in working with companies to deliver infrastructure projects that will help to stimulate our economy, create green jobs and support Londoners who have been affected the most by the economic crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is essential that infrastructure initiatives are utilised to serve all Londoners as we work to recover from this pandemic and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/covid-19-construction-industry\/74935\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">build back better<\/a> with a fairer and greener economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy working together with the major utility companies to progress and bring forward these projects, we have a valuable opportunity to improve the diversity of the sector and to help create new jobs for those who have been disproportionately impacted by Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will help us to ensure nobody is left behind in London\u2019s recovery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am really pleased to work with the utility companies to support the city now and in the weeks ahead at the same time as reaching out to all Londoners to hear their long-term aspirations for the capital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Peter John, chair of London Councils, commented:\u00a0\u201cCollaboration is at the heart of London\u2019s work to overcome the terrible impact of Covid-19 and rebuild a stronger, more equal and sustainable economy in the months and years ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLondon boroughs are committed to bringing their powers, relationships and local knowledge to the table to ensure London\u2019s recovery delivers jobs, infrastructure and inclusive growth for communities across the capital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark Adolphus, director of connections at UK Power Networks, said:\u00a0\u201cAs the company which delivers electricity to 2.3 million properties to keep the capital running smoothly, we are a leading architect of the low-carbon economy and know our role is particularly vital now in enabling the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/recovery-from-covid-19\/79736\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UK\u2019s economic recovery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look forward to continuing diverse investment and innovation projects that will help businesses to thrive, and people to make the most of emerging technologies both interim executive chairman at Thames Water, added:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cAs we embark on an ambitious programme to invest \u00a31bn over the next two years to improve the water and wastewater services Londoners rely on, it is a real boost to have the backing of the London Recovery Board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is also great news for the economy, because delivering our plans will support our
