{"id":80504,"date":"2020-08-06T07:00:45","date_gmt":"2020-08-06T06:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=80504"},"modified":"2023-06-26T12:59:51","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T11:59:51","slug":"atkins-drive-project-delivery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/construction-technology-news\/atkins-drive-project-delivery\/80504\/","title":{"rendered":"Atkins and nPlan collaborate to drive project delivery"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atkinsglobal.com\/en-gb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Atkins<\/a> has formed a partnership with artificial intelligence technology start-up company, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nplan.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nPlan<\/a>, to explore new data-driven contracting models for major project delivery<\/h2>\n<p>The work \u2013 which will be supported through funding from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/innovate-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Innovate UK<\/a> \u2013 brings together Atkins\u2019 project delivery experience and nPlan\u2019s cutting edge machine learning technology.<\/p>\n<p>It will identify and assess a new approach to contracting that focuses on collaboration and changes the way risk is measured, shared and managed across major infrastructure programmes.<\/p>\n<p>nPlan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/new-technologies-project-planning\/80146\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">machine learning technology<\/a> uses multiple techniques to learn how projects perform.<\/p>\n<p>At a high level, the algorithm learns by comparing the individual activities in a baseline schedule to activities in an actualised schedule. This process is repeated hundreds of millions of times building out a knowledge base of project performance which will allow for impartial and collective forecasting, increased transparency between project partners and a shared, improved view of project risk.<\/p>\n<p>The team will work alongside asset owners such as Heathrow Airport to analyse the current contracting models before developing and piloting data and technology-driven alternatives over the next 12 months.<\/p>\n<h3>Research<\/h3>\n<p>The research forms part of Atkins\u2019 ongoing focus and investment into digital solutions that have the potential to transform infrastructure delivery\u00a0\u2013 will also identify how technology can support initiatives, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Institute of Civil Engineer<\/a>\u2019s Project 13 and proposed reinventions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.org.uk\/what-is-civil-engineering\/what-do-civil-engineers-do\/new-engineering-contract#:~:text=The%20New%20Engineering%20Contract%20(NEC,project%20from%20start%20to%20finish.&amp;text=NEC%20contracts%20aim%20to%20prevent,largely%20'adversarial'%20in%20approach.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Engineering Contracts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Findings will be shared in autumn 2021 and published in an open industry report.<\/p>\n<h3>Unlock and encourage innovation<\/h3>\n<p>Richard Robinson, Atkins UK &amp;
