{"id":80715,"date":"2020-08-10T12:27:40","date_gmt":"2020-08-10T11:27:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=80715"},"modified":"2020-08-10T12:27:40","modified_gmt":"2020-08-10T11:27:40","slug":"construction-smes-covid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/construction-smes-covid\/80715\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction SMEs prove resilient in the face of Covid-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Construction SMEs are leading the recovery in the industry, as they prove to be more resilient than their larger counterparts, according to analysis from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hudsoncontract.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hudson Contract<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Construction SMEs have proven to be more resilient during the economic downturn than their larger counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>New analysis from Hudson Contract suggests that large \ufb01rms have cut 30% of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/support-subcontractors\/79064\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">subcontractors<\/a> since the week before lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>SMEs appear to have recovered more strongly and are using 21% fewer subcontractors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-80717 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/recovery.png\" alt=\"Construction SMEs,\" width=\"883\" height=\"572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/recovery.png 883w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/recovery-300x194.png 300w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/recovery-768x498.png 768w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/recovery-696x451.png 696w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/recovery-648x420.png 648w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/recovery-610x395.png 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 883px) 100vw, 883px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>\u2018More resilient, agile and adaptive\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Ian An\ufb01eld, managing director of Hudson Contract, said: \u201cOur \ufb01gures show how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-industry-smes\/79575\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SMEs<\/a> are leading the recovery in the construction industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmaller companies are proving more resilient, agile and adaptive to the new circumstances and are investing in skilled subcontractors to retain productive labour and \ufb01nish jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey will help Britain to build the new homes and infrastructure we need to ensure a sustainable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/social-housing-recovery\/80283\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">economic recovery<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An\ufb01eld added: \u201cBy contrast, large construction \ufb01rms tend to work on more complex projects which have been hit harder by the downturn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are also reporting a shortage of labour as a result of generous Government support schemes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The activity levels of large \ufb01rms have recovered since the depths of lockdown when the average number of subcontractors paid fell by 77%.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the average number used by smaller \ufb01rms dipped by 66%. Hudson compared the average number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/tradespeople-construction\/75972\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">freelance tradespeople<\/a> paid in the weeks commencing 16 March, 20 April and 20 July.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis re\ufb02ects the labour demands of micro, small, medium and large companies that continued to operate during the period.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, average weekly earnings for subcontractors recovered by 4.8% to \u00a3889 during the month of July, the highest number since March.<\/p>\n<p>The best-performing regions were Wales (up 12%), Yorkshire and the Humber (up 9.9%) and the East of England and South East (both up 7.8%).<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%; height:
