{"id":80795,"date":"2020-08-12T07:00:30","date_gmt":"2020-08-12T06:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=80795"},"modified":"2020-08-11T14:26:15","modified_gmt":"2020-08-11T13:26:15","slug":"northern-infrastructure-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/northern-infrastructure-projects\/80795\/","title":{"rendered":"Government urged to back \u00a35bn Northern infrastructure pipeline"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/transportforthenorth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Transport for the North<\/a> (TfN) has urged the government to back plans for a \u00a35bn pipeline of infrastructure projects to underpin greener Northern growth<\/h2>\n<p>Transport for the North (TfN) has set out\u00a0its\u00a0initial\u00a0proposals for\u00a0a\u00a0Northern Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP) \u2013\u00a0a\u00a030-year\u00a0investment\u00a0plan\u00a0of infrastructure projects\u00a0to underpin greener Northern growth.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a35bn pipeline includes rail, road, active travel and smart ticketing proposals.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the plans\u00a0could be started over the next 6-18 months to help the economy \u2018build back better\u2019 after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/covid-19-construction-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Covid-19 pandemic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The pipeline could also help\u00a0create\u00a0around\u00a020,000\u00a0construction and design jobs in the North of England.<\/p>\n<p>The Northern Infrastructure Pipeline underpins\u00a0TfN\u2019s\u00a0proposed Economic Recovery Plan\u00a0(ERP)\u00a0recently agreed by the North\u2019s business and civic leaders.<\/p>\n<p>The ERP is aimed at accelerating the delivery of infrastructure projects to help \u201crebuild and transform the North\u201d by making transport more accessible and inclusive, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/building-decarbonisation\/74802\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decarbonising the economy<\/a> in the years to come.<\/p>\n<h3>It is\u00a0split into the key areas\u00a0of:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Schemes that can be delivered within 6-18 months: Immediately supporting jobs and the region\u2019s recovery<\/li>\n<li>Schemes that can start construction within 2-4 years: Supporting longer-term economic recovery and rebuilding<\/li>\n<li>Schemes\u00a0where immediate investment in accelerating\u00a0the\u00a0development\u00a0of projects\u00a0would support jobs, boost confidence and\u00a0maintain an ongoing Northern Infrastructure Pipeline to transform the North.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s also aimed at rebuilding and transforming the capacity and resilience of the North\u2019s rail network and laying the groundwork for projects like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/northern-powerhouse-rail-programme\/76932\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Northern Powerhouse Rail<\/a> to future proof the region\u2019s railway for generations to come.<\/p>\n<p>It highlights the need for accelerating the green transition, including pilots of hydrogen and battery-powered trains, as well as rolling out essential charging infrastructure from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/electric-vehicle-infrastructure\/79146\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">electric vehicles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Rebuilding the North\u2019s economy<\/h3>\n<p>Barry White, chief executive at Transport for the North, said: \u201cOur focus must be on rebuilding the North\u2019s economy, which was already at an economic disadvantage to the South before Covid-19 hit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Economic Recovery Plan outlines quick-fire ways to rapidly invest in shovel-ready infrastructure projects and initiatives, helping rebuild and transform the North over the next few years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that\u2019ll not only deliver an economic prize, to the tune of\u00a020,000\u00a0jobs and a return of \u00a33 for every \u00a31 spent but \u2013 more importantly \u2013 a social return.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll help better connect communities, slash carbon emissions from transport in the North and support people in living healthier lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>White added: \u201cCrucially, these aren\u2019t new or over-ambitious asks. They\u2019re projects already in the system that now need the starting gun firing or a bit of work to nudge them across the line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have welcomed the government&#8217;s ambition to accelerate projects and this is a great opportunity for its recently formed Northern Transport Acceleration Council to drive forward the delivery of projects.
