railway research centres in UK universities that will enable it to access world-leading research capabilities, knowledge and facilities<\/h2>\n<p>The agreement with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukrrin.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UK Rail Research and Innovation Network<\/a> (UKRRIN) will enable HS2 Ltd to be at the forefront of innovation in the rail sector, and help accelerate new technologies and products from research into market applications globally.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the \u201c3\u2019Cs\u201d \u2013 increasing\u00a0<em>capacity<\/em> on the rail network, offering greater\u00a0<em>connectivity<\/em> around Britain, and creating a low\u00a0<em>carbon<\/em> transport alternative \u2013 building HS2 aims to show off the very best of British skills, innovation and engineering, and this partnership is an example of that.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.ac.uk\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Birmingham<\/a> will coordinate UKRRIN activities in support of HS2 Ltd under the agreement, and support R&amp;D from across the three UKRRIN academic centres of excellence.<\/p>\n<h3>Including:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/supply-chain-technology\/80706\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Digital Systems<\/a> (led by the University of Birmingham)<\/li>\n<li>Infrastructure (led by the University of Southampton)<\/li>\n<li>Rolling Stock (led by the University of Huddersfield)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Helping Britain decarbonise<\/h3>\n<p>Signing the agreement with UKRRIN on behalf of HS2 Ltd, the project\u2019s head of innovation, Howard Mitchell, said: \u201cHS2 is a major opportunity for British academia and UK plc to come together and meet the challenge of delivering what is a huge investment in the country\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe programme\u2019s scale and longevity creates the right conditions to develop solutions for High Speed 2 and also the wider rail industry \u2013 both of which are crucial in helping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/decarbonise-uk-construction\/79367\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Britain to decarbonise<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first project under the new agreement will be led by the University of Birmingham and will use simulation models to improve understanding of the performance of expansion joints used on high-speed rails.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Clive Roberts, director of the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE), said: \u201cBCRRE works very closely with our industry partners to develop and deploy world-leading technologies onto the railway.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;High-speed rail is a vital part of the future of rail innovation in the UK and we\u2019re delighted to be joining forces with HS2 to play our part in that future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Stephen Jarvis, head of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Birmingham, said: \u201cBy supporting HS2\u2019s research programme we can help accelerate advances that will improve the UK\u2019s railways through increasing capacity and decreasing the system\u2019s carbon footprint.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Through initiatives like this, we can put the UK at the forefront of rail innovation and play our part in restoring the UK\u2019s economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<div
