of its <\/span><span style=\"color: #111111; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 27px;\">Innovation Accelerator programme to search for SMEs with ideas on how to accelerate building work on the railway<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It is the second round of recruitment of SMEs and tech start-ups for HS2\u2019s Innovation Accelerator programme.<\/p>\n<p>The first phase in June received over 100 applications.<\/p>\n<h3>HS2 is looking to recruit five more small firms with bright ideas on:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>How people can best spend time at stations before their train goes; and<\/li>\n<li>How to optimise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/construct-digital-solutions\/65264\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">digital solutions<\/a> for building HS2 to make every second count.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The winning five entrants will join the first cohort, chosen from 109 applications from the first recruitment programme, who will work on the challenges of \u2013 productivity, environment, and the circular economy.<\/p>\n<p>Innovation Accelerator ideas include 3D concrete printing and using automated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/harnessing-drone-technology-to-inform-planning-and-maintenance\/64866\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">drone technology<\/a> to assist with the planting of seven million trees along the HS2 route.<\/p>\n<p>From today (17 August) an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationbham.com\/high-speed-two-ltd-accelerator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online application portal<\/a> will be open for one month, after which time HS2 Ltd will choose five of the companies entered to take forward on the Innovation Accelerator.<\/p>\n<p>The Accelerator will provide commercial and technical support and rent-free Birmingham-based working space to develop their proposal.<\/p>\n<p>After six months, solutions will be showcased and pitched to industry investors and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/supply-chain-technology\/80706\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HS2&#8217;s supply chain<\/a>, which is made up of the thousands of suppliers.<\/p>\n<h3>Enabling new thinking<\/h3>\n<p>HS2 Ltd head of innovation, Howard Mitchell said: \u201cWe received over 100 applications from innovative tech start-ups and SMEs to join Cohort One of HS2\u2019s Innovation Accelerator programme, which beat all our expectations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe level of interest underlines the opportunity that HS2 offers to some of the most innovative and dynamic young firms in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m therefore extremely positive about the prospects for Cohort Two, and new thinking on how we build Britain\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/hs2-survey-2\/75559\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high-speed rail network<\/a>, and enable passengers to make best use of their time in our stations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The portal closes to applications on 18
