{"id":81079,"date":"2020-08-18T10:33:17","date_gmt":"2020-08-18T09:33:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=81079"},"modified":"2020-08-18T10:33:17","modified_gmt":"2020-08-18T09:33:17","slug":"soham-railway-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/soham-railway-station\/81079\/","title":{"rendered":"Murphy to deliver Soham\u2019s new railway station"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkrail.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Network Rail<\/a> has appointed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murphygroup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J Murphy and Sons<\/a> to build Soham\u2019s new railway station, which will deliver a new 99-metre platform and a footbridge<\/h2>\n<p>Soham has been without a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/hs2-survey-2\/75559\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rail connection<\/a> for almost 55 years. This contract will provide the community with more transport choices to local destinations and support investment as part of the council\u2019s vision for the wider area.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a318.6m funding package for Soham\u2019s new railway station has been provided by the <a href=\"https:\/\/cambridgeshirepeterborough-ca.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority<\/a>, led by Mayor James Palmer.<\/p>\n<p>Consent was secured from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastcambs.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">East Cambridgeshire District Council<\/a> in June.<\/p>\n<h3>The contract includes:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Construction of a single 99-metre platform to accommodate four-car train services including waiting shelters, lighting, information screens and a public address system.<\/li>\n<li>Installation of a stepped footbridge across the railway to connect to an existing public right of way, designed for any future installation of lifts for a potential second platform for any scheme.<\/li>\n<li>Construction of a drop off point and a car park to accommodate 50 vehicles and five spaces for blue badge holders, as well as lighting masts.<\/li>\n<li>Cycle parking and ticket vending machines on the station forecourt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>An important transport gateway<\/h3>\n<p>Ellie Burrows, Network Rail\u2019s route director for Anglia said: \u201cAwarding the contract provides us with the means to be able to start delivering this important<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/tag\/transport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> transport gateway<\/a> for Soham.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project is a prime example of what we can do when we work in partnership with other organisations to improve the railway for the benefit of local communities and businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cambridgeshire &amp; Peterborough Mayor James Palmer, commented: \u201cThis is one of the last milestones before we deliver the station that the Soham community has campaigned for.
