{"id":81176,"date":"2020-08-19T11:56:11","date_gmt":"2020-08-19T10:56:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=81176"},"modified":"2020-08-19T11:56:11","modified_gmt":"2020-08-19T10:56:11","slug":"greenhouse-gas-emissions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/greenhouse-gas-emissions\/81176\/","title":{"rendered":"Global greenhouse gas emissions dramatically reduced"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>31 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced globally in the last nine years as a result of UK intervention, according to new climate finance data published today (19 August)<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/international-climate-finance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UK International Climate Finance<\/a> (ICF) investments aim to reduce poverty by helping developing countries build resilience and manage the risks of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Developing countries are the hardest hit by climate change and the World Bank estimates that without intervention the impact of rising emissions could push an additional 100 million people into poverty by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021 the UK will host the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukcop26.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COP26 climate summit in Glasgow<\/a>, building on the success of the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement to tackle climate change internationally.<\/p>\n<p>The UK\u2019s world-leading ICF investments demonstrate the Prime Minister\u2019s commitment to helping the world <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/recovery-plan-build-back-better\/78825\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">build back better<\/a> from coronavirus by preventing deforestation, investing in climate-resilient crops and implementing early warning systems for floods.<\/p>\n<h3>Since 2011, UK aid investment has:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Provided 33 million people with improved access to clean energy, including connections to off-grid renewable energy sources, access to solar lanterns and clean cookstoves.<\/li>\n<li>Installed 2000 MW of clean energy capacity, equivalent to the capacity of 454 average-sized UK offshore wind turbines.<\/li>\n<li>Helped 66 million people to cope with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/climate-experts-help-construction-prepare-for-unpredictable-weather\/72493\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">effects of climate change<\/a>, for example by providing training on how to grow climate-resilient crops.<\/li>\n<li>Leveraged \u00a32.2bn of private finance to fight climate change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Committed to tackling climate change<\/h3>\n<p>International development secretary, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, said: \u201cAs the world starts to recover from coronavirus, we have a unique opportunity to help the poorest countries build back greener from this devastating pandemic and become more resilient to the impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUK aid is fighting climate change while lifting people out of poverty.
