{"id":81197,"date":"2020-08-20T07:30:13","date_gmt":"2020-08-20T06:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=81197"},"modified":"2020-08-19T14:46:22","modified_gmt":"2020-08-19T13:46:22","slug":"clean-recovery-construction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/construction-technology-news\/clean-recovery-construction\/81197\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction experts call for \u2018clean recovery\u2019 post-Covid"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Construction industry experts have called on the sector to lead a \u2018clean recovery\u2019 from Covid-19, as the pandemic injects a renewed sense of urgency into existing challenges<\/h2>\n<p>Construction industry experts \u2013 including team members from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.willmottdixon.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Willmott Dixon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colas.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colas Group<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/innovate-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Innovate UK<\/a> and NCC \u2013 have unanimously called for a \u2018clean recovery\u2019 from Covid-19, according to a new report published by <a href=\"https:\/\/hyperdriveinnovation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hyperdrive Innovation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018An Electric Decade in Construction\u2019 \u2013 which includes views from fifteen leading industry experts across Europe \u2013 forecasts a rapid growth in demand for cleaner, electric equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The study finds that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/covid-19-construction-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Covid-19 pandemic<\/a> has injected a renewed sense of urgency into existing challenges the industry has faced in recent years, including tightening air pollution legislation, meeting carbon emissions targets and an ever-increasing demand for infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Irish, commercial director of Hyperdrive Innovation, said: \u201cWithin the challenges on the industry to clean up its operations, lies a rich opportunity to jump-start the transition to cleaner equipment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis report clearly and unequivocally finds that the next decade will be shaped by a rapid transition to cleaner, zero-emission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/big-data-construction-equipment\/58173\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">construction equipment<\/a>. Now is the time for the industry to take a leading role in achieving a more sustainable future.<\/p>\n<h3>An electric future<\/h3>\n<p>\u2018An Electric Decade in Construction\u2019 found that the next ten years in the industry will be centred around four key themes.<\/p>\n<h4>Key themes include:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Speed<\/strong> \u2013 Delays caused by Covid-19 mean that projects will need to increase productivity to meet deadlines and avoid unwanted additional costs. With electrified equipment considerably quieter than traditional equipment, the number of hours per day where machinery can be used can be extended, enhancing productivity and speeding up construction processes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Safety<\/strong> \u2013 Covid-19 has also brought a renewed focus on workplace safety within the industry \u2013 specifically, the pandemic has shone a spotlight onto the dangers of air pollution. To meet tightening air quality legislation and protect workers and the public against air pollution from construction sites, the industry is looking to move away from noisy, polluting diesel engines and generators and towards cleaner, quieter electrified machinery.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sustainability<\/strong> \u2013 Building and construction are responsible for 11% of the world\u2019s carbon emissions, making decarbonisation essential. Stricter engine and emissions legislation to meet climate targets is driving the industry away from its reliance on fossil fuels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Simplicity \u2013<\/strong> Lower fuel and maintenance costs and being future-proofed against the ever-changing legislative landscape, will drive the construction industry towards simple electrified equipment. The industry also expects an uptick in demand for a \u2018modern methods\u2019 approach to construction, using prefabricated, standardised building components developed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/modular-construction-news\/offsite-construction-the-answer\/80883\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">offsite<\/a>, to simplify and clean up construction processes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Building back from Covid-19<\/h3>\n<p>As lockdowns ease across the globe, construction will now need to be ramped up to meet the growing demand for infrastructure across Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Pitts, deputy challenge director transforming construction at Innovate UK and contributor to the report, said: \u2018\u2018In the past, the construction industry has been somewhat reluctant to make use of the latest innovations.
