{"id":81237,"date":"2020-08-20T11:59:10","date_gmt":"2020-08-20T10:59:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=81237"},"modified":"2020-08-21T08:54:29","modified_gmt":"2020-08-21T07:54:29","slug":"landmark-environmental-evaluations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/landmark-environmental-evaluations\/81237\/","title":{"rendered":"Landmark provides free environment checks on Nightingale hospitals"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Landmark provided free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.landmark.co.uk\/envirocheck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Envirocheck<\/a> reports to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mod.uk\/who-we-are\/corps-regiments-and-units\/corps-of-royal-engineers\/66-works-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">66 Works Group Royal Engineer<\/a> carrying out an evaluation of environmental factors to consider in the design of NHS Nightingale hospitals in Birmingham, Manchester and Cardiff<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.landmark.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Landmark Information Group<\/a> provided, at no cost, specialists of 66 Works Group Royal Engineers with Envirocheck reports of the location of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/nightingale-hospital-birmingham\/74686\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Birmingham and Manchester Nightingales<\/a> and Cardiff\u2019s Dragon&#8217;s Heart Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>These reports allowed a rapid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/environmental-risk-assessments-2\/61206\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">evaluation of environmental issues<\/a> to consider in repurposing exhibition centres and a stadium for use as hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>Envirocheck assesses a huge wealth of both historic and current data \u2013 including data from each location as far back as 1851 in order to fully assess how the land has been utilised over time.<\/p>\n<h3>Risk assessment<\/h3>\n<p>An important consideration for the hospital sites was to consider not only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/national-flood-map-2\/71128\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">conventional flood risk<\/a>\u00a0but to assess how solid and liquid wastes resulting from medical practices would need to be managed \u2013 and ultimately disposed of \u2013 without endangering the wider environment.<\/p>\n<p>Given the considerable use of water by Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and the potential for public water supplies being interrupted or overwhelmed the potential for constructing on-site groundwater abstraction, wells were evaluated.<\/p>\n<p>The environmental issues were passed on to site selection decision-makers and the engineering reconnaissance teams to support their work.<\/p>\n<p>These evaluations were carried out over a weekend whilst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/construction-work-from-home\/73470\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">working from home<\/a>, under the lockdown confinements in place at the time. Having rapid access to the Envirocheck reports for each location allowed useful information to be accessed and interpreted at a time when travel and access to physical repositories of information was simply not possible.<\/p>\n<p>The speed of the evaluation \u2013 three sites evaluated within just one day \u2013 would not have been possible, even if travel had been possible.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of May, the Nightingale and Dragon hospitals were either mothballed or only looking after a small number of patients.
