Plans for 65 new council homes, a state-of-the-art education centre and new affordable workplace in Brent have been given the green light<\/h2>\n

Brent Council\u2019s<\/a> planning committee approved the scheme to deliver a new building at 1 Morland Gardens which would provide a modern purpose-built home for Brent\u2019s adult education service.<\/p>\n

65 new council homes will be made available at London Affordable Rent, 21 of which will be family-sized homes, including a number of 4-bed and 5-bed homes.<\/p>\n

\u2018An affordable place to call home\u2019<\/h3>\n

Councillor Amer Agha, cabinet member for schools, employment & skills, said: \u201cGiven how Covid-19<\/a> has disproportionately affected Brent, both by case numbers and in its economic impact, this kind of new educational facility and the affordable workspace which will be provided, has never been needed more and so I\u2019m very pleased that the committee voted in favour of the plans.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile it means replacing the Victorian-era building, the benefits of the scheme are far greater and will have a tangible impact on the lives of our residents for generations to come.<\/p>\n

\u201cScores of households will have an affordable place to call home, local entrepreneurs will have affordable workspace to start-up their businesses and the new purpose-built adult education facility<\/a> will help Brent Start to do even more in providing new skills and qualifications for our residents, helping them to be more competitive in the job market and progress their careers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harlesden-based youth leadership consultant and member of the project\u2019s Community Steering Group, Errol Donald, said that it was \u201can essential step in reinvigorating the local community, by providing meaningful opportunities for people to live, learn and work sustainably.\u201d<\/p>\n

Donald added: \u201cIn providing real hope and genuine opportunities for people to access affordable housing<\/a>, specialist skills, training and custom-built workspaces, I feel the scheme will undoubtedly play a key role in supporting a community that has shown incredible resilience for as long as I can remember.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a community that I feel are equally deserving for the chance to thrive and grow as those who inhabit other areas of the borough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brent Council\u2019s Cabinet agreed in January to commit \u00a343m to the scheme, including \u00a315m of Strategic CIL money to fit out the new educational facility, all subject to the planning permission received last night.<\/p>\n

Councillor Agha added: \u201cThis is a significant investment not just in a new fit-for-purpose building for Stonebridge and Harlesden, but it\u2019s an investment in what matters the most, which is the people of this borough, as we help equip them for the challenges they face now and in the future, which will make a real difference in their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
