VolkerHighways<\/a> has been awarded a \u00a39m street lighting contract with Medway Council<\/a> to install thousands of energy efficient lights across Medway<\/h2>\n

The contract will involve the replacement of around 24,000 street lighting lanterns with efficient energy-saving LEDs and the provision of a Central Management System (CMS).<\/p>\n

In addition, another 2,000 existing lanterns will be retrofitted with a CMS.<\/p>\n

By using LEDs with a CMS system, the lights can be controlled remotely, saving even more energy, minimising onsite maintenance and reducing costs for the council.<\/p>\n

VolkerHighways will replace 3,500 concrete and 1,000 steel columns with aluminium units<\/a> which is not only a highly durable material, but also an aesthetically pleasing option.<\/p>\n

In heritage areas, a total of 1,350 lanterns will also be carefully refurbished or replaced with sympathetic designs.<\/p>\n

The contract is additional to VolkerHighways\u2019 five-year Highways Term Maintenance Contract with Medway Council.<\/p>\n

Improving the environment<\/h3>\n

Phil Filmer, Medway Council\u2019s portfolio holder for Frontline Services, said: \u201cI am pleased that thousands of energy efficient lights will be installed across Medway over the next two years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese lights consume less energy<\/a>, reduce light pollution and support our ongoing work around climate change. The lighting upgrade also includes a new management system, which will allow us to switch the lights on and off and dim them, where necessary.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis will give us better control over power consumption and the system will automatically notify us of any faults and reduce the need for regular inspections.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis project is just one of many ways that we are seeking to reduce our carbon footprint, improve the environment within Medway and start to lay the foundations for our Smart City ambitions. I look forward to seeing the replacement works progress.\u201d<\/p>\n

Managing director for VolkerHighways, Alistair Thompson, added: \u201cWe have a long-standing relationship with Medway Council and so are delighted to be awarded this additional street lighting contract.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s great to be part of a project that will deliver real environmental change, with a highly efficient energy saving lighting solution, that incorporates smart, future-proofed systems.<\/p>\n

The works on the energy efficient street lights began on 24 August and will continue until July 2022.<\/p>\n
