{"id":81774,"date":"2020-09-01T08:47:51","date_gmt":"2020-09-01T07:47:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=81774"},"modified":"2020-09-01T08:47:51","modified_gmt":"2020-09-01T07:47:51","slug":"timber-industry-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/mmc-news\/timber-industry-campaign\/81774\/","title":{"rendered":"Timber industry campaign to reduce CO2\u00a0in construction"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.woodforgood.com\/CO2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wood CO<sub>2<\/sub>ts less<\/a> aims to increase awareness of timber\u2019s environmental credentials and highlight how using wood from sustainable forests is one of the simplest ways to reduce carbon emissions<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/timber-frame-construction\/80258\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">timber industry<\/a> has already taken its own steps to create more sustainable buildings through initiatives such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciob.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chartered Institute of Building\u2019s<\/a> (CIOB) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciob.org\/industry\/politics-government\/campaigns\/carbon-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carbon Action 2050 toolkit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Wood CO<sub>2<\/sub>ts less campaign calls on the construction industry to continue this positive movement, through using more wood.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the timber industry collaborating on the campaign include <a href=\"https:\/\/woodforgood.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wood for Good<\/a> and industry bodies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swedishwood.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Swedish Wood<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.confor.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Confor<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ttf.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Timber Trade Federation<\/a> (TTF), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.structuraltimber.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Structural Timber Association<\/a> (STA) and British Woodworking Federation (BWF)<\/p>\n<h3>Using timber solutions engineered offsite<\/h3>\n<p>Sarah Virgo, Wood for Good campaign manager, said: \u201cThe government set a target for the construction industry to achieve net-zero carbon by 2050 but it\u2019s not feasible for all sectors of the economy to become carbon neutral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo reach net-zero, we need to compensate for these emissions by finding ways of removing carbon from the atmosphere. The simplest way to contribute to this reduction is to consider wood first, instead of other materials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we are to meet government targets and reduce climate change, we must act now. Everyone involved with the design and construction of a building, new or old, can play their part in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/countryside-climate-emergency\/78868\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tackling the climate emergency<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Carpenter, STA chief executive, said: \u201cThe shortage of housing in the UK is an issue that has been acknowledged by successive governments;
