{"id":81983,"date":"2020-09-04T08:26:17","date_gmt":"2020-09-04T07:26:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=81983"},"modified":"2020-09-04T08:26:17","modified_gmt":"2020-09-04T07:26:17","slug":"low-carbon-homes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/low-carbon-homes\/81983\/","title":{"rendered":"ENGIE to redevelop Peckham garage site into low carbon homes"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engie.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ENGIE<\/a> has been appointed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southwark.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Southwark Council<\/a> to regenerate a former garage site in Peckham, into 23 new low carbon homes for social rent<\/h2>\n<p>The \u00a36m <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/demand-side-response-trial\/81485\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">low carbon homes<\/a> project will see ENGIE regenerate the Rye Hill Park garages into two blocks of high-quality homes for social rent.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme is part of a wider commitment from\u00a0Southwark Council\u00a0to build 11,000 new council homes by 2043 by improving underused sites and existing estates.<\/p>\n<p>The 23 new homes are located within two interlinked blocks, which are designed to provide high levels of fabric efficiency through enhanced thermal insulation levels and airtightness, beyond the requirements of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/future-building-regulations\/61867\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">building regulations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This will reduce the building\u2019s overall energy demand and in conjunction with energy-efficient heating and fittings, will provide residents with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/smart-heating-controls\/81458\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">warmer homes<\/a> and lower energy bills.<\/p>\n<p>Roof-mounted photo-electric solar panels will generate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/green-homes-grants\/80914\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018green\u2019 electricity<\/a> to provide direct power to the blocks to meet Southwark Council\u2019s requirement for a 40% overall reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.<\/p>\n<p>This will reduce the need to draw electricity from the grid, further reducing the overall running costs of the new blocks.<\/p>\n<h3>Much-needed new homes<\/h3>\n<p>Colin Macpherson, divisional CEO for ENGIE UK, said: \u201cRegeneration of vacant land can play an instrumental role in the provision of much-needed new homes and offers a prime opportunity to future proof our housing stock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re proud to be supporting Southwark Council on their ambitious journey to deliver 11,000 new council homes;
