In light of World Suicide Prevention Day, Wates<\/a> is encouraging its colleagues to \u2018take a minute\u2019 as UK suicide rates soar<\/h2>\n

UK suicide rates have soared, with the highest level of male suicides in two decades, and the highest rate of female suicides since 2004, according to ONS figures<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Wates has launched a\u00a0company-wide\u00a0campaign to encourage colleagues to\u00a0\u2018take a minute\u2019\u00a0\u2013\u00a0time\u00a0to\u00a0talk to someone to get help, to not mask\u00a0how\u00a0they feel,\u00a0to notice a friend or colleague who is struggling\u00a0or to simply start a conversation.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Wates\u00a0has been\u00a0also\u00a0working with the suicide\u00a0prevention charity PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide<\/a>\u00a0to help break down the stigma of talking about mental health, and to\u00a0help\u00a0reduce the high levels of suicides\u00a0in\u00a0construction.<\/p>\n

According to ONS figures, male construction\u00a0workers<\/a>\u00a0are three times more likely to\u00a0die by\u00a0suicide than\u00a0the rest of the population\u00a0and\u00a0Wates is using\u00a0World Suicide Prevention Day as a call to action, to encourage colleagues to\u00a0help create \u2018suicide safer communities\u2019,\u00a0where they\u00a0can\u00a0talk openly and less secretively about suicide.<\/p>\n

The campaign is supported by a short video and series of posters, aimed particularly at colleagues working in largely male environments where the stigma of discussing mental health can be hard to overcome.<\/p>\n

In addition, a webinar, open to all employees, and hosted together with PAPYRUS, will feature a panel of colleagues including those whose lives have been directly affected by suicide. The panellists will share their experiences and discuss ways of creating safer communities where colleagues can more easily talk about their mental health<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Creating a safe place<\/h3>\n

John Dunne, safety, health, environment & quality director at Wates Group, said: \u201cTo know that in our industry so many people are struggling to the extent that they feel their only option is to end their life, is simply tragic.<\/p>\n

“We have a moral duty to look out for one another, but we also have to focus on making our workplaces and working practices the best they can be, which includes driving a culture whereby everyone feels safe to open up and able to ask for help.”<\/p>\n

Joann Hitchen, NW regional manager at PAPYRUS, a panellist at today\u2019s webinar, commented: \u201cPAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide has been working collaboratively with Wates for the last two years.<\/p>\n

“It all began when Carl Wales, a PAPYRUS Champion, started delivering suicide prevention<\/a> awareness sessions to his colleagues at Wates.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough\u00a0his\u00a0passion and the enthusiasm of his colleagues and\u00a0directors this suicide prevention work morphed into something much bigger.<\/p>\n

\u201cPAPYRUS resources are available at most construction sites;\u00a0Wates staff are undergoing Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training delivered by PAPYRUS; colleagues have\u00a0fundraised, and the\u00a0PAPYRUS helpline, HOPELINEUK (0800 068 4141), is displayed in\u00a0company\u00a0vehicles\u00a0and on\u00a0scaffolding on several\u00a0sites across the UK.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs result of all these things we know that lives are being saved as people are asking the question, \u2018Are you having thoughts of suicide?\u2019 and people are calling HOPELINEUK.<\/p>\n
