{"id":82473,"date":"2020-09-15T12:11:09","date_gmt":"2020-09-15T11:11:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=82473"},"modified":"2020-09-15T12:11:09","modified_gmt":"2020-09-15T11:11:09","slug":"inaccessible-homes-during-lockdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/inaccessible-homes-during-lockdown\/82473\/","title":{"rendered":"Inaccessible homes make lockdown tougher for disabled people"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>New research has found that inaccessible homes have made lockdown significantly harder for many disabled UK adults, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/overview\/all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouGov<\/a> poll<\/h2>\n<p>A YouGov poll commissioned by housing association <a href=\"https:\/\/www.habinteg.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Habinteg<\/a> revealed that of those disabled people surveyed, their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/mental-health-lockdown\/74422\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wellbeing during lockdown<\/a> was three times more likely to have been damaged by lack of access in the home when compared to non-disabled people.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, over two in five were unable to fully use their bathroom or kitchen without assistance (22% and 23%).<\/p>\n<p>The poll, which marks the start of Habinteg\u2019s annual #ForAccessibleHomes week \u2013 also found that the disabled respondents surveyed were 17 times more likely than non-disabled people to be unable to carry out all daily tasks and activities at home without assistance during lockdown (35% v 2%).<\/p>\n<p>These findings come as the government has launched its public consultation on making all new homes more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/accessible-housing\/71340\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accessible for older and disabled people<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>The survey identified that:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Disabled respondents were 23 times more likely than non-disabled people to not be able to use all parts of their kitchen without assistance during lockdown.<\/li>\n<li>Disabled respondents were 22 times more likely than non-disabled people to not be able to use all parts of their bathroom without assistance during lockdown.<\/li>\n<li>Almost one in four disabled people (24%) do not have a home that meets their access needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The need for change<\/h3>\n<p>Amy Jonson, who lives in an inaccessible home with her disabled son, said: \u201cMy property doesn\u2019t have many accessible features, which means I\u2019m usually left carrying my son around the home and in and out the bathtub; he\u2019s nearly nine so as you can imagine, this is not an easy task.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen lockdown began, I was the sole carer for my son 24 hours a day due to the school closures. This meant I had to do more lifting than I was used to. It really highlighted just how bad our house is for my son\u2019s health (and mine) and it cannot be a long-term solution if he is to ever be independent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHabinteg\u2019s findings prove that my situation isn\u2019t a rare one. Many disabled people up and down the country have had to make do in homes that just aren\u2019t suitable for them. We really need this to change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Habinteg\u2019s CEO, Sheron Carter, added: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/uk-construction-may\/77148\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lockdown was challenging<\/a> for most people, but this data shows that for far too many disabled people the challenges were significantly worse because of access issues within their home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor far too long disabled and older people have been expected to \u2018make do\u2019 and put up with being unable to carry out the basics of daily living with any degree of independence.
