Esh Construction<\/a> has landed a \u00a310m contract to transform the Hexham Bunker into a 69-bedroom Travelodge and Lidl retail outlet<\/h2>\n

The retail development will be based on land formerly used as a nuclear bunker and will also provide a new 250-space public car park for the town.<\/p>\n

Delivered on behalf of Union Property Development (Hexham) Ltd, the project will include significant works on the highways infrastructure<\/a> which will improve access to the site and the safety of pedestrians.<\/p>\n

The 5.5-acre Hexham Bunker site was purchased in October 2018 by Union Property after being vacant for nearly 30 years.<\/p>\n

Plans to open a new Lidl store and Travelodge hotel were given the green light by Northumberland County Council<\/a> in late 2019 and include outline consent for two further retail units.<\/p>\n

The four-storey Travelodge and 2,177m2 Lidl food store will include customer parking and all associated external works.<\/p>\n

Esh has been appointed as the design and build contractor to deliver the development, working in partnership with the design team \u2013 FaulknerBrowns Architects<\/a>, Portland Consulting Engineers<\/a> and kyoob<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u2018Long in the making\u2019<\/h3>\n

Gary Dobson, divisional director at Esh Construction, said: \u201cWe are delighted to have been awarded the contract for Hexham Bunker and to be working in partnership with Union Property.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe scheme has been long in the making and is a great addition to Esh\u2019s portfolio, with over \u00a380m of projects currently underway within our commercial build division.\u201d<\/p>\n

The development is expected to create 60 new permanent jobs in the area and an estimated \u00a32.16m visitor spending to Hexham.<\/p>\n

Peter Carruthers, consultant project director at Union Property, added: \u201cWe are delighted to receive the go-ahead from Northumberland County Council.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have worked closely with planning officers to design a scheme which will reflect the character of Hexham. This represents a very significant economic investment<\/a> in the town and will bring a long-term vacant site back into use\u201d.<\/p>\n

Construction is set to commence in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n
