{"id":82705,"date":"2020-09-21T09:32:47","date_gmt":"2020-09-21T08:32:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=82705"},"modified":"2020-09-21T09:32:47","modified_gmt":"2020-09-21T08:32:47","slug":"scottish-construction-employers-apprentices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/scottish-construction-employers-apprentices\/82705\/","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19: Scottish construction employers rethink apprentices"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A new study has revealed that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/covid-19-construction-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Covid-19 pandemic<\/a> has caused more than half of Scottish construction employers to rethink hiring apprentices<\/h2>\n<p>The survey, which received over 600 responses, was conducted in collaboration with the Scottish Construction Modern Apprenticeship Task Force and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citb.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CITB<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>CITB explained that the aim of the survey was to understand the views of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/scottish-construction-recovery\/81739\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scottish construction<\/a> employers on their immediate and longer-term plans.<\/p>\n<h4>The findings revealed that:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Coronavirus has caused just over half (55%) of Scottish construction employers who had planned to recruit an apprentice this year to change their plans<\/li>\n<li>Additional support measures such as grants and funding, subsidised wages, and work trials would be helpful in encouraging these employers to hire an apprentice<\/li>\n<li>Over three quarters (76%) of employers saw value in this year\u2019s apprentice applicants completing construction pre-employment training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Support pathways to apprenticeships<\/h3>\n<p>The results were shared with the Scottish government, who have since committed \u00a360m to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/cruden-modern-apprentices\/81287\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">support pathways to apprenticeships<\/a> and create additional opportunities in colleges through a new Youth Guarantee.<\/p>\n<p>CITB will soon also unveil its longer-term strategic plan to support skills and training in the industry, as it moves towards the recovery phase.<\/p>\n<p>CITB partnerships director Scotland, Ian Hughes, said: \u201cIt\u2019s fantastic to see so many employers engaging with our recent survey.
