{"id":82763,"date":"2020-09-22T07:00:14","date_gmt":"2020-09-22T06:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=82763"},"modified":"2020-09-21T12:54:40","modified_gmt":"2020-09-21T11:54:40","slug":"special-needs-school-bristol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/special-needs-school-bristol\/82763\/","title":{"rendered":"Interserve begins work on new special needs school in Bristol"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.interserve.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Interserve<\/a> was awarded the \u00a39.3m contract by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department for Education<\/a> to design and build the new Soundwell Academy for Learn@ MAT, which delivers specialist education for children across the South West<\/h2>\n<p>The academy will be constructed on the Soundwell Centre site which was formerly part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityofbristol.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">City of Bristol College<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Interserve will create a facility for pupils with a range of needs, with the design team paying particular attention to creating a variety of bespoke learning spaces as well as a residential unit for short midweek stays.<\/p>\n<p>The Learn@ group of academies serve the West of England with specialist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/education-building\/80874\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">education facilities<\/a> for children aged five through to 19 who have a variety of needs.<\/p>\n<p>Interserve\u2019s successful bid for the Learn@ contract aligns with the Interserve Construction\u2019s strategy of delivering first-class facilities in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/education-construction-spirals-downward\/75482\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">education sector<\/a>, where it has a strong track record as partner with the Department for Education.<\/p>\n<p>In the past six months, Interserve has been awarded six new school build projects including a \u00a327m contract to build the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/new-saddleworth-school\/73824\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Saddleworth School<\/a> in Oldham.<\/p>\n<p>Also working on the Learn@ MAT project at Soundwell are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dka.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DKA Architects<\/a>, structural engineers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarkebond.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clarke Bond<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.silcockdawson.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Silcock Dawson<\/a>, which will provide maintenance and engineering support.<\/p>\n<h3>Modern new facilities and resources<\/h3>\n<p>Paul Gale, divisional director at Interserve Construction, said: \u201cWe are pleased to have been selected to deliver a specialist education academy for Learn@ which adds to our portfolio of work on schools in the South West.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis contract award further strengthens our position as one of the leading construction companies serving the UK\u2019s education sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Learn@ MAT spokesperson, said: \u201cWhen it eventually reaches full capacity on the main site at Soundwell the school will cater for 136 young people aged between five-to-18-years, with Social and Emotional Mental Health needs or Speech, Language and Communication Needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new provision will have modern new facilities and resources to meet the range of needs of young people.
