{"id":82820,"date":"2020-09-22T13:04:41","date_gmt":"2020-09-22T12:04:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=82820"},"modified":"2020-09-23T08:18:59","modified_gmt":"2020-09-23T07:18:59","slug":"hs2-low-carbon-concrete","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/hs2-low-carbon-concrete\/82820\/","title":{"rendered":"HS2: Low carbon concrete to reduce carbon emissions"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hs2.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HS2<\/a> contractors in London have begun using a new low carbon concrete product which provides a reduction of 42% in CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0in comparison to a standard concrete<\/h2>\n<p>The product, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/low-carbon-concrete\/72344\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CarbonNeutral\u00ae<\/a>, in accordance with The CarbonNeutral Protocol, used for the first time in London, has been supplied to HS2\u2019s enabling works contractor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.costain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Costain<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skanska.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Skanska<\/a> joint venture, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lydoncontracting.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lydon Contracting Ltd<\/a> by global building materials manufacturer CEMEX, from their plant, based in Wembley.<\/p>\n<p>After engineering carbon reductions into the concrete mix design, CEMEX calculates the embodied carbon generated from extraction and processing of raw materials, product manufacturing and distribution. The residual carbon is then offset, making the concrete carbon neutral from manufacture to use.<\/p>\n<p>To achieve carbon neutrality, carbon is offset by the removal or reduction of emissions of carbon dioxide or other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/greenhouse-gas-emissions\/81176\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">greenhouse gases<\/a> from the atmosphere in order to compensate for emissions made elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>The first use of the Vertua Classic Zero concrete in the capital recently took place at an HS2 site in North West London, ready to prepare the ground for an electricity substation which will power the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/tunnel-boring-machines\/76662\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tunnel boring machines<\/a> excavating HS2\u2019s London tunnels.<\/p>\n<p>A further delivery of Vertua is planned at the same site by the end of October.
