An inflatable safety barrier is being\u00a0trialled in the Midlands to help protect road workers on Highways England\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0road\u00a0network<\/h2>\n

The inflatable safety barrier that can be put up\u00a0in a matter\u00a0of minutes and aims to\u00a0reduce the number of motorists that mistakenly drive into work areas\u00a0putting the drivers and road workers<\/a> at risk.<\/p>\n

Large, bright and very visible, the Vehicle Incursion Airbag sends a clear message to drivers but can also be put in place very quickly \u2013 it is\u00a0inflated in under 10 minutes.<\/p>\n

\u2018Improve safety for road workers\u2019<\/h3>\n

Highways England\u2019s\u00a0Midlands\u00a0innovation manager,\u00a0Lisa Maric,\u00a0said:\u00a0\u201cOn average, our road workers report approximately 240 incidents of vehicle incursions each month.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a\u00a0far too\u00a0frequent hazard for our workforce going about their daily job \u2013\u00a0and\u00a0the consequences could be fatal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are committed to keeping our workforce safe and doing all we can to ensure no-one is harmed when travelling or working on our network.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are also committed to investing in new innovations to help improve safety for road workers<\/a> and users.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope these airbags will go some way to protecting our workers but also help change drivers’ behaviours.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe ask drivers to respect our road workers, to slow down near works and obey speed limits and signs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The trial, being carried out with partners Kier<\/a>, will initially use the\u00a0inflatable safety barrier on a slip road at\u00a0the A45\/A46 Stivichall interchange in Coventry during roadworks later this month.<\/p>\n

It is anticipated that the airbag will be tested within various types of temporary traffic management scenarios over the coming months.<\/p>\n

\u2018Take a different tack\u2019<\/h3>\n

Senior project manager at Kier Highways, Mark Sheppard, commented:\u00a0\u201cThe Vehicle Incursion Airbag project will give us a great opportunity to trial something a little bit different, to supplement the standard approach to road worker protection measures.<\/p>\n

\u201cTraffic management<\/a> incursions are all too common, so the chance to take a different tack to help influence the decisions made by some road users is worth exploring.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully, it\u2019ll help towards making the network a safer place for drivers and our workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n

The inflatable barrier is in addition to cones and signs, adding another layer to the traditional traffic management to influence drivers’ behaviour and prevent vehicle incursions.<\/p>\n
