{"id":83549,"date":"2020-10-07T09:39:08","date_gmt":"2020-10-07T08:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=83549"},"modified":"2020-10-07T09:39:08","modified_gmt":"2020-10-07T08:39:08","slug":"national-grid-launch-stem-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/national-grid-launch-stem-skills\/83549\/","title":{"rendered":"National Grid launches STEM skills and careers programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>More than 100,000 pupils in South London will benefit from the new STEM skills and careers outreach programmes being launched by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgrid.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Grid<\/a> in association with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mykindafuture.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MyKindaFuture<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>According to research carried out by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgrid.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Grid<\/a>, the energy sector needs to fill 400,000 roles between now and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/modular-construction-news\/offsite-net-zero-target\/80736\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2050 to meet net-zero<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This innovative programme aims to support meeting this target, while at the same time giving students in some of London\u2019s most disadvantaged areas greater opportunities to learn about the industry and the range of careers they could pursue.<\/p>\n<p>The programme will be offered to students in years 10-13 as research suggests that disadvantaged students are twice as likely to become NEET (not in education, employment or training) aged 18 than their more affluent peers.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme will reach young people living in the seven boroughs of South London that are impacted by National Grid\u2019s \u00a31bn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/london-power-tunnels\/82962\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">London Power Tunnels<\/a> (LPT) project to rewire the capital.<\/p>\n<h3>Covid-19 economic effects<\/h3>\n<p>The Covid-19 pandemic and its significant impact on schools have meant that underrepresented students need careers to support more than ever;
