a course towards a digital, sustainable built environment"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A new publication explores the\u00a0actions that will need to be taken by the construction sector over the next 20 years if we are to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), on carbon reduction targets<\/h2>\n<p>Four Futures, One Choice has been developed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdbb.cam.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centre for Digital Built Britain<\/a> as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/constructioninnovationhub.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Construction Innovation Hub<\/a>\u2019s transformative programme, presents four possible future scenarios for what the construction sector of 2040 could look like.<\/p>\n<p>The four scenarios provide insight into a series of swift and decisive actions that can both aid the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/covid-19-construction-recovery\/84166\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sector\u2019s Covid-19 recovery<\/a> and, in the longer-term, lead to a more sustainable built environment.<\/p>\n<p>The four scenarios were developed by identifying a number of potential driving forces and factors.<\/p>\n<h3>These included:<\/h3>\n<h4>UN\u00a0Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/h4>\n<p>17 goals set by the United Nations that envision a world where the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/sustainable-built-environment\/70388\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sustainable built environment<\/a> is a platform for the flourishing society and the natural world;<\/p>\n<h4>Dependency ratio<\/h4>\n<p>Ameasure of the number of dependents aged between 0 to 15 and aged 68 or over, compared with the total population aged 16 to 67.<\/p>\n<h3>Identify, refine and develop solutions<\/h3>\n<p>Construction Innovation Hub programme director, Keith Waller, said: \u201cThe scenarios explored in this book reinforce the need to move on from opting for the cheapest option and instead shift the focus towards what\u2019s best for the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Value Toolkit is designed to get the sector thinking and talking more about the value and reframe the way decisions affecting the built environment are made and ensure that impacts on the environment and society are considered as part of this process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother area where we are actively working to shape the future is our focus on digitally designed components.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Platform Design Programme will develop and embed these principles, helping to create new platform solutions that can be deployed across multiple projects and sectors so that the components can be used as part of a school, hospital, prison building or station.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy working with industry, we aim to identify, refine and develop solutions that can be deployed at scale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we make the right choices now, we can look forward to a transformed natural and built environment in 2040 that is powered by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/construction-apprenticeship\/78744\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">growing skilled construction workforce<\/a>, highly literate in using data securely for the public good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Four Futures, One Choice,\u00a0which was released in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdbb.cam.ac.uk\/fourfutures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">summary format<\/a>, will be available as an open access
