housing confirmed for Scotland&#8217;s rural communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A five-year programme to fund Scotland&#8217;s affordable housing projects in rural and island communities is being extended, housing minister Kevin Stewart has told Parliament<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/policies\/more-homes\/rural-housing-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rural and Islands Housing Funds<\/a>, worth up to \u00a330m, were launched in 2016 and will now run beyond March next year.<\/p>\n<p>The funds are part of the wider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/publications\/affordable-housing-supply-programme-process-and-procedures-mhdgn-2020-02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Affordable Housing Supply Programme<\/a>, which has delivered about 4,800 affordable homes in the rural and island communities over the first four years of this Parliament, including on Islay, Iona, Skye, Orkney, Shetland, the Outer Hebrides, Mull, Raasay and Rum.<\/p>\n<p>The funds help groups such as community organisations, development trusts and\u00a0private landowners to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/trading-update-springfield\/59334\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">build new affordable housing<\/a> or refurbish existing properties and have already supported projects that will deliver around 200 homes.<\/p>\n<h3>A vital boost to affordable housing<\/h3>\n<p>Housing minister, Kevin Stewart said: \u201cIt is important for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scottish Government<\/a> to help our valuable rural and island communities to provide sustainable affordable housing in their local areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Rural and Islands Housing Funds were set up to address some of the issues these areas have faced and have been described as \u2018game changers\u2019 by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.landcommission.gov.scot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scottish Land Commission<\/a>, providing a vital boost to affordable housing in remote rural Scotland and on our islands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne or two homes in a small community can be as important as a large-scale development in a city.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have seen at first-hand how these funds supported a development of 12 homes in the village of Drumnadrochit that has allowed older residents to live independently, with support from a nearby day centre \u2013 an inspiring project created by the community themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want this good work to carry on, and have been listening to feedback from local communities, councils and rural housing stakeholders, who want these funds to continue and deliver a strong pipeline of new homes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As such, I am pleased to announce the continuation of the funds beyond March
