{"id":85511,"date":"2020-11-19T08:43:45","date_gmt":"2020-11-19T08:43:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=85511"},"modified":"2020-11-19T08:43:45","modified_gmt":"2020-11-19T08:43:45","slug":"south-wales-hospital-opens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/south-wales-hospital-opens\/85511\/","title":{"rendered":"South Wales hospital opens four months early to help fight Covid-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The \u00a3350m <a href=\"https:\/\/abuhb.nhs.wales\/clinical-futures\/the-grange-university-hospital1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grange University Hospital<\/a> (GUH) in Gwent, South Wales opened to patients on 17 November \u2013 four months ahead of schedule, in a bid to help the <a href=\"https:\/\/abuhb.nhs.wales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aneurin Bevan University Health Board<\/a> (ABUHB) respond to winter pressures and Covid-19<\/h2>\n<p>The project has been delivered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laingorourke.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Laing O\u2019Rourke<\/a> working in collaboration with project and cost manager, <a href=\"https:\/\/gb.gleeds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gleeds<\/a>, architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bdp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BDP<\/a> and with engineering support from <a href=\"https:\/\/aecom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aecom<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WSP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Following the board\u2019s recent occupation of the remaining space, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/grange-university-hospital\/75499\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the hospital<\/a> will now provide a centre of excellence to treat the region\u2019s most seriously ill patients, or those with significant injuries, and it will also act as the Emergency Department (A&amp;E) for everyone living in Gwent.<\/p>\n<p>Watch how a super-hospital is delivered.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"H2W7j4bnVeI\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Laing O&#039;Rourke - Grange University Hospital\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H2W7j4bnVeI?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Mike Lewis, Laing O\u2019Rourke project director, said: \u201cI am extraordinarily proud of the team of people who have delivered GUH four months ahead of schedule amidst a global pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarly hand over was possible because we used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/modular-construction-news\/modern-construction-myths\/80656\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Modern Methods of Construction<\/a> (MMC) from the outset and in doing so were able to deliver 50% of the building to Aneurin Bevan University Hospital Board back in April \u2013 a year earlier than originally scheduled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project marks a pivotal point in healthcare delivery, paving the way for future hospital builds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing involved in a hospital build is always a privilege but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/covid19-construction-impact\/74038\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">impact of Covid-19<\/a> truly galvanised everyone\u2019s efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe men and women charged with completing the hospital felt a sense of personal responsibility to achieve early completion and as we hand over the keys to the Health Board I want to thank my own team and wish the clinicians and staff all the very best in their new hospital \u2013 and to thank them for the enormous efforts they make day in, day out to take care of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victoria Head, Gleeds\u2019 head of healthcare in the UK, added: \u201cAs work on the GUH project comes to a close and the building comes to life, welcoming patients and delivering first class healthcare services, I feel immensely proud about what our team has achieved \u2013 the provision of a fantastic facility, well ahead of schedule, and against the backdrop of the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our commitment to doing things differently has paid dividends, from a programme saving of 23% achieved through our use of MMC, to our pledge to collaborate with both Laing O\u2019Rourke and the ABUHB throughout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe GUH has changed the rhetoric of how healthcare projects should be delivered;
