The system will then be able to come up with alternative materials quicker.

“For a large scale project for example, instead of taking 5-10 hours to work out alternatives, it could initially take only one to two hours and further down the road, once more data is gathered, just a few minutes.”

The work, which started in November, will initially use Winvic and Costain’s commercial premises as test sites for the AI solution. The plan is then to roll out the software to building designers and others working in the construction industry.

Dr Akanbi, added: “The objective is to make the system available to building designers and enable them to use it as part of their existing design systems, such as Autodesk Revit. This way they can implement embodied carbon analysis incrementally throughout construction projects’ delivery.

“UWE Bristol is a university that’s environmentally aware and is aiming to be carbon neutral by 2030, so it’s great that we are taking a lead in a project that is looking to help achieve similar aims.”

Computer scientists at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) are developing software that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to help construction companies reduce the amount of embodied carbon in their projects.

[141293,307
172725,594,277,693,676,856,574,430,279,273,465
{"0":"post-85963","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-digital-construction-news","7":"category-energy-news","8":"tag-artificial-intelligence","9":"tag-building-design","10":"tag-built-environment","11":"tag-climate-change","12":"tag-construction","13":"tag-construction-technology","14":"tag-data-management","15":"tag-energy-efficiency","16":"tag-environment","17":"tag-research-innovation","18":"tag-sustainable-construction

AI software to help construction industry reduce embodied carbon

<meta property="og:site_name" content="Planning, Building &
