{"id":86358,"date":"2020-12-08T11:37:47","date_gmt":"2020-12-08T11:37:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=86358"},"modified":"2020-12-08T11:37:47","modified_gmt":"2020-12-08T11:37:47","slug":"dust-breaches-construction-sites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/dust-breaches-construction-sites\/86358\/","title":{"rendered":"BSG report dust breaches up 23% on construction sites"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The <a href=\"https:\/\/bsgltd.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Building Safety Group<\/a> (BSG) has reported a 23% rise in the number of dust breaches occurring on construction sites<\/h2>\n<p>BSG\u2019s report was based on 9000 independent site inspections conducted over a 6-month period from June to November 2020. Two periods were compared which revealed the increase. Between June and August, there were 209 infringements recorded.<\/p>\n<p>This was set against 258 non-compliances that were catalogued between September and November 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Each year 1,000s of construction workers contract or die from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/dust-free-insulation\/83589\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">respiratory diseases due to breathing in dust and fumes<\/a>. Managing and controlling exposure to dust has become a major challenge for the industry.<\/p>\n<h3>The most common types of breach found included:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Failure to set up effective dust suppression and extraction procedures on site<\/li>\n<li>Not having dust masks face fit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_86360\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86360\" style=\"width: 655px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-86360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/BSG-DUST-GRAPH-FOR-PR-300x131.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"655\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/BSG-DUST-GRAPH-FOR-PR-300x131.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/BSG-DUST-GRAPH-FOR-PR-768x335.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/BSG-DUST-GRAPH-FOR-PR-696x303.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/BSG-DUST-GRAPH-FOR-PR-610x266.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/BSG-DUST-GRAPH-FOR-PR.jpg 801w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86360\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dust breaches on construction sites: 1st Jun \u2013 30th Nov 2020<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>BSG\u2019s report coincides with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health and Safety Executive<\/a>\u2019s (HSE) recent month-long initiative inspecting respiratory risks and occupational lung disease in the construction sector.<\/p>\n<p>The primary focus was to identify what measures had been put in place to protect workers\u2019 lungs from asbestos, silica and wood dust.<\/p>\n<p>HSE inspectors also looked for evidence of employers and workers knowing the risks, planning their work and using appropriate controls. Enforcement was required where it was found that people were not being adequately protected.<\/p>\n<h3>Life-changing illnesses<\/h3>\n<p>BSG\u2019s managing director, Stephen Bell said: &#8220;Construction workers have a high risk of developing these diseases because many common construction tasks can create high dust levels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/manage-asbestos-lockdown\/84973\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Work-related cancers<\/a>, mainly linked to asbestos and silica, are estimated to kill 3,500 people from the industry every year. Thousands of others suffer life-changing illnesses from their work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur advice is to always look at ways of stopping or reducing the amount of dust before the job is started.
