{"id":86610,"date":"2020-12-16T07:30:09","date_gmt":"2020-12-16T07:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=86610"},"modified":"2020-12-15T17:45:37","modified_gmt":"2020-12-15T17:45:37","slug":"birmingham-smithfield-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/birmingham-smithfield-development\/86610\/","title":{"rendered":"Green light for new Birmingham Smithfield development"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Birmingham City Council<\/a> has agreed to enter into a joint venture agreement with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lendlease.com\/uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lendlease Europe<\/a> for the \u00a31.9bn Birmingham Smithfield development<\/h2>\n<p>The decision is a major milestone for a scheme, which is one of the most significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/willmott-dixon-birmingham\/86470\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">development opportunities in the city<\/a> and a key strand of plans to transform the city centre.<\/p>\n<p>Once a contract has been finalised and approved by both parties then work on the planning application for the scheme will be able to begin, and a full public consultation held to enable local people to have their say as more detailed plans are developed.<\/p>\n<h3>The new urban quarter will include:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A new home for Birmingham\u2019s historic Bull Ring Markets.<\/li>\n<li>A unique family destination that includes leisure and cultural facilities.<\/li>\n<li>A new public square.<\/li>\n<li>Integrated public transport.<\/li>\n<li>More than 2,000 homes, with a public park and community facilities.<\/li>\n<li>Following the Cabinet\u2019s decision and, subject to approval by both parties, the joint venture contract will be finalised.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Opportunities for future generations<\/h3>\n<p>Ian Ward, leader of Birmingham City Council said: \u201cBirmingham Smithfield is a real once in a lifetime opportunity to create a new community in the heart of our city \u2013 and we are really excited to be working with Lendlease Europe, who have an international proven track record for bringing forward major developments like this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEntering into this agreement with Lendlease Europe is not just about bricks and mortar;
