Unite the union has launched a \u2018more comprehensive and stringent\u2019 Covid-19 construction guide than the industry\u2019s\u00a0Site\u00a0Operating Procedures<\/a><\/h2>\n

Dissatisfied with the CLC\u2019s Site\u00a0Operating Procedures<\/a>, Unite has produced its own Covid-19 construction guide to help ensure the safety of construction workers during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

The guide titled\u00a0\u2018Construction Sector: Covid-19 Guide<\/a>\u2019\u00a0is aimed at Unite\u2019s construction representatives but can be utilised by all workers.<\/p>\n

Existing safety measures probed<\/h3>\n

The industry\u2019s existing safety measures have been questioned<\/a> following the belated realisation by \u2018experts\u2019 that a great deal of construction work is not conducted outdoors, dramatically increasing transmission risks if mask-wearing and social distancing are not observed.<\/p>\n

Unite says its Covid-19 construction guide is far more comprehensive and stringent than the industry\u2019s\u00a0Site\u00a0Operating Procedures, which have been heavily criticised for failing to make the wearing of masks compulsory when social distancing cannot be maintained.<\/p>\n

As well as issues such as social distancing<\/a> on sites, the importance of ventilation and advice on face coverings,\u00a0Unite\u2019s guide also covers advice on travelling to and from site and guidance on how the Covid-19 pandemic can have an impact on workers\u2019 mental health.<\/p>\n

\u2018Invaluable tool to protect workers\u2019<\/h3>\n

Unite national officer, Jerry Swain, said:\u00a0\u201cThe new construction Covid guide is an invaluable tool to protect workers on sites.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe guide provides easy to follow and vital information that workers need to stay safe on site. Unlike other guides, Unite\u2019s guide is solely focused on workers safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is essential that Unite construction activists use the guide to ensure that every organised workplace is Covid-secure\u00a0as is humanly possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unite national officer, Ian Woodland, added: \u201cWith cases of Covid-19 surging and with a vaccination still many months off for most workers, it is imperative that there is not only no let-up on-site safety but further measures are taken to prevent the virus being transmitted.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnite activists are on the frontline in keeping fellow workers and themselves safe from when they leave home until when they return home at night.\u201d<\/p>\n
