{"id":86796,"date":"2021-01-04T08:31:09","date_gmt":"2021-01-04T08:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=86796"},"modified":"2021-02-22T14:17:18","modified_gmt":"2021-02-22T14:17:18","slug":"rail-bridge-replacement-contract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/rail-bridge-replacement-contract\/86796\/","title":{"rendered":"Skanska secures Network Rail bridge replacement contract"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The \u00a352m contract will lead to the replacement of the SAS13 bridge on the Stechford to Aston (SAS) rail line, making way for the new HS2 route<\/h2>\n<p>The contract has been agreed as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skanska.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Skanska<\/a>\u2019s work under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkrail.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Infrastructure-Projects-Strategic-Plan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Infrastructure Projects (IP) Central Framework for Network Rail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The existing bridge, comprising eight masonry arches and a central steelwork span, will be demolished and replaced with a single 92 metre-span steel structure.<\/p>\n<p>The works will pave the way for the construction of the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/birmingham-curzon-street-station\/78165\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HS2 line approach into Birmingham<\/a> and the planned HS2 Midlands Maintenance Depot.<\/p>\n<p>The Stechford to Aston (SAS) rail line and Derby to Birmingham (DBP3) rail line over which the new bridge will span, that run to the east of Birmingham city centre, are key routes for freight and local people.<\/p>\n<p>Skanska has worked closely with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/network-rail-contracts\/80164\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Network Rail and its supply chain<\/a> partners to optimise up time on the rail line during construction, supporting Network Rail\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkrail.co.uk\/putting-passengers-first\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Putting Passengers First<\/a> vision.<\/p>\n<p>The bridge, which will be the largest single-span railway bridge in the West Midlands, has been designed to minimise the steel tonnage.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a352m contract is in addition to development services work that Skanska has already delivered during the detailed design and enabling works for the project, valued at \u00a314m.<\/p>\n<p>The project is due for completion in September 2022.<\/p>\n<h3>Optimising rail services during construction<\/h3>\n<p>Jonathan Willcock, managing director of Skanska\u2019s infrastructure business, said: \u201cWe\u2019re delighted to win this contract and to be working with Network Rail on this key project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt builds on our long-standing relationship with Network Rail, where we have a successful track record of delivery \u2013 particularly in the North West &amp; Central region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We understand the region well and have built excellent relationships, including with our supply chain partners.
