research from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmb.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Federation of Master Builders<\/a> (FMB) has found<\/h2>\n<p>Builders were asked to identify the biggest barrier to installing more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/energy-efficiency-framework-2\/85323\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">energy efficiency measures<\/a>, in line with the UK government\u2019s target to get as many homes as possible to EPC rating C by 2035.<\/p>\n<h3>Research found:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A lack of a clear pipeline of work \u2013 26% of respondents<\/li>\n<li>A lack of available finance for consumers \u2013 19%<\/li>\n<li>A lack of consumer awareness of the benefits of energy efficiency measures \u2013 17%<\/li>\n<li>A lack of capacity and skills in the construction workforce \u2013 16%<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t know \u2013 15%<\/li>\n<li>None of these \u2013 6%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These figures were issued on the same day that the FMB found just 3 out of 250 builders who have expressed an interest in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/apply-for-the-green-homes-grant-scheme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green Homes Grant scheme<\/a> have so far completed the necessary registration and training.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;Cash to go green&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>Brian Berry, chief executive of the FMB, said: \u201cWithout a long-term government plan for making our homes greener and more energy-efficient, we won\u2019t be able to tackle fuel poverty, end preventable winter deaths, or meet the UK\u2019s climate change targets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuilders don\u2019t yet have the confidence they need in the domestic energy efficiency market to invest in their businesses and start offering these services to homeowners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLow engagement in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/green-homes-grants\/80914\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green Homes Grant<\/a> scheme has illustrated this problem, with just three Master Builders becoming accredited to deliver this work since the scheme\u2019s launch.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A long-term plan, in the form of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionleadershipcouncil.co.uk\/news\/national-retrofit-strategy-consultative-document\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Retrofit Strategy<\/a>, would address these concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA National Retrofit Strategy would need to be underpinned by a package of fiscal incentives that helps consumers to do their bit for the environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith one in five builders saying clients do not have the cash to go green, the government should temporarily cut VAT on home improvements so that more capital is available for homeowners to do the extension they want while also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/government-clean-energy-system\/86501\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">improving the energy efficiency<\/a> of their home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is also essential that the government funds and makes available the necessary training courses for builders so that they can get accredited to deliver green home upgrades, and to a quality standard.\u201d<\/p>\n<div
