{"id":88521,"date":"2021-02-03T12:12:56","date_gmt":"2021-02-03T12:12:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=88521"},"modified":"2021-02-03T12:12:56","modified_gmt":"2021-02-03T12:12:56","slug":"flood-defence-port-tilbury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/flood-defence-port-tilbury\/88521\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00a334m flood defence scheme underway at Port of Tilbury"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Construction work has started to improve the Port of Tilbury\u2019s flood defences with the installation of new dual-function flood lock gates<\/h2>\n<p>The existing port lock gates will be replaced with pioneering dual function lock gates, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/environment-agency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Environment Agency<\/a>\u2019s tidal barrier will be removed.<\/p>\n<p>Work started in January and is expected to last for 18 months with the new lock gates planned for installation in late 2021\/early 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Once the work is completed it will ensure a high standard of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/new-standards-flood-protection\/78146\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flood protection<\/a> for Tilbury and provide a new navigation lock for operations at the busy port.<\/p>\n<p>Planning for this project has been underway with the\u00a0Environment Agency\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/tarmac-new-terminal-tilbury2\/66097\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Port of Tilbury<\/a>\u00a0for several years.<\/p>\n<p>With total scheme costs of around \u00a334m, the Port of Tilbury London Ltd (PoTLL) is providing a multi-million-pound contribution to the project and will take responsibility for operation and maintenance of the new dual-function structure.<\/p>\n<p>Funding has also been secured from the Anglian (Eastern) Regional Flood and Coastal Committee. Councillor Gerard Rice represents Thurrock Council on this Committee.<\/p>\n<p>The Environment Agency\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/thames-estuary-asset-management-2100-programme-team2100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thames Estuary Asset Management 2100 Programme<\/a>\u00a0(TEAM2100) will deliver the work in partnership with a number of contractors including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacobs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacobs<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.balfourbeatty.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Balfour Beatty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This scheme is part of the government\u2019s long-term investment in flood and coastal defences. Since 2015 it has invested \u00a32.6bn to better protect the country from flooding and coastal erosion and is on course to have better protected 300,000 homes by March 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the government announced a record \u00a35.2bn investment in flood and coastal defences and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/national-flood-and-coastal-erosion-risk-management-strategy-for-england--2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National FCRM Strategy<\/a>\u00a0will help build a better prepared and more resilient nation.<\/p>\n<h3>A key part of the new flood strategy<\/h3>\n<p>James Bevan, Environment Agency chief executive, said: \u201cWe are investing \u00a35.2bn in flood defences over the next 6 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Port of Tilbury is vital to our national economy. The new scheme is an important and exciting project that has both flood protection and navigational purpose and will help protect jobs and growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Tilbury barrier will reduce flood risk for the port, residents and business.
