scaffolders extend strike at British Steel site"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The British Steel plant in Scunthorpe faces further disruption this month as scaffolders based at the site announced a further six days of strike action in a dispute over pay<\/h2>\n<p>The 50 plus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/scaffolders-strike\/87762\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scaffolders involved in the strike action<\/a> are employed by contractor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brand Energy<\/a> to undertake maintenance on over 500 scaffolding structures that are on the British Steel site.<\/p>\n<p>The workers have already taken four days of strike action and will mount a further 48-hour strike beginning at 05:30 on 8 February.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/unitetheunion.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Unite<\/a> has now announced a 48-hour strike to begin at 05:30 on 15 February, a 24-hour hours strike beginning at 05:30 on 18 February, then a further 48-hour strike beginning at 05:30 on 22 February and finally a 24-hour strike from 05:30 on 25 February.<\/p>\n<h3>Dispute history<\/h3>\n<p>The pay dispute began in 2019 when Unite submitted a pay claim that the workers should be paid in line with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.njceci.org.uk\/national-agreement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Agreement for the Engineering Construction Industry<\/a> (NAECI).<\/p>\n<p>There is currently a difference of \u00a32.00 an hour between the NAECI rate and what Brand Energy\u2019s workers currently receive.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2019, Brand Energy has refused to engage with Unite on the pay issue but since strike action began the company has indicated that it is keen to seek a resolution, yet it has not yet proposed any dates for fresh negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>The four days of strike action have generated a great deal of support for the scaffolders but have inevitably caused considerable disruption for suppliers and workers entering the site.<\/p>\n<h3>Committed to entering into negotiations<\/h3>\n<p>Unite regional officer, John McIntyre, said:\u00a0\u201cUnite has received warm words from Brand Energy that they want to resolve the dispute but\u00a0not received any firm proposals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a result Unite has no option but to step up industrial action, which will certainly cause further disruption to British Steel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe remain committed to entering into negotiations with Brand Energy and its client British Steel, in order to secure an agreement acceptable to all sides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ball is now firmly in Brand Energy\u2019s
