{"id":88668,"date":"2021-02-08T09:38:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-08T09:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=88668"},"modified":"2021-02-08T09:38:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-08T09:38:00","slug":"rugeley-power-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/rugeley-power-station\/88668\/","title":{"rendered":"ENGIE\u2019s Rugeley sustainable school masterplan gets funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engie.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ENGIE<\/a>\u2019s plans for the redevelopment of the former Rugeley Power Station in Staffordshire, have been given a major boost<\/h2>\n<p>The Rugeley Power Station plans have been\u00a0awarded funding through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department for Education<\/a>\u2019s (DfE) free school programme for a brand-new all-through school.<\/p>\n<p>The funding was granted through wave 14 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/modular-construction-news\/offsite-schools-framework-dfe\/70185\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DfE programme<\/a> after a JTMAT application demonstrated the significant benefits the investment would bring to Rugeley.<\/p>\n<p>ENGIE announced plans in late 2018 to transform the coal-fired Power Station site, which is owned, into a sustainable, mixed-use development of 2,300 new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/gorton-lane-scheme\/88632\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">low carbon homes<\/a>; and up to 12.36-acres of employment space, which received outline planning approval earlier last year.<\/p>\n<h3>Low carbon all through school<\/h3>\n<p>ENGIE later submitted an amendment to the application to potentially include a low carbon all through school within the development and this was granted in July 2020 by the local planning authorities.<\/p>\n<p>The school, which will welcome children from the Rugeley and Lichfield local districts, as well as the future residents on the Rugeley Power Station site, will be entirely sustainable in design and net-zero carbon in operation.<\/p>\n<p>Everything will be electric and renewable energy will play a key role in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/construction-ecological-footprint\/88192\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reducing carbon emissions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Paving the way for the education sector<\/h3>\n<p>Mark Dolling, director \u2013 education &amp; public sector capital programmes at ENGIE UK &amp; Ireland, said: \u201cENGIE is delighted to be working with JTMAT and other stakeholders in leading the design and delivery of this new school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an extremely exciting project for all involved \u2013 we are not only providing a new, highly sustainable school that will sit at the heart of a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/zero-carbon-homes-in-cheshire\/86330\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">low carbon community<\/a>; but we are paving the way for the education sector more broadly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchools can play an integral part in leading the transition to zero carbon and this new school, alongside the wider development, will offer a sustainable place for people to live, work and learn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe passionately believe the scheme will act as an exemplar in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/productive-placemaking\/84404\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">placemaking<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>JTMAT CEO, Mike Donoghue, added: \u201cWe are naturally excited and extremely proud to have been given the responsibility to lead the new school at Rugeley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow the work begins in earnest to fulfil our vision to create the best school we possibly can.
