A railway track worker was struck and tragically killed by a train on Tuesday (9 February) morning close to Surbiton Station on the South Western Railway<\/h2>\n

Emergency services arrived at the scene and an investigation into the incident, which happened around 11.38 am, is on-going. The railway<\/a> track worker \u2013 who was working for Network Rail \u2013 has not been named.<\/p>\n

Two other workers\u00a0who were\u00a0nearby are not thought to have been hurt.<\/p>\n

The train involved was the 11:06 service from London Waterloo to Hampton Court.<\/p>\n

Andrew Haines, Network Rail<\/a> chief executive, said: \u201cI am devastated to confirm that a colleague has lost his life following a tragic accident near Surbiton today. This is an incredibly sad time for the railway family.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy thoughts, and those of everyone at Network Rail, are with the families and friends of the colleague involved.<\/p>\n

“Our immediate priority now is to cooperate fully with the British Transport Police<\/a> and Rail Accident Investigation Branch<\/a> to fully understand what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018A thorough\u00a0investigation must take place\u2019<\/h3>\n

TSSA general secretary, Manuel Cortes said: \u201cOur thoughts and sympathies are with the worker who has died and their family members. Any loss of life on our railways is a tragedy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u00a0would be wrong to speculate at this time about what has gone wrong, but a full\u00a0and thorough\u00a0investigation must take place, so lessons can be learned.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur union has been warning\u00a0Network Rail\u00a0about the\u00a0alarming\u00a0number of near misses and fatalities we have seen over the past year.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur Network Rail members do so much to keep our railways running smoothly\u00a0day in day out and\u00a0must be able to do this in a safe environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur union will never compromise on safety<\/a>, and safety\u00a0can never be taken for granted. It is simply not acceptable\u00a0in this day and age\u00a0that\u00a0people go out to work and end up losing their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
