{"id":88904,"date":"2021-02-11T12:19:35","date_gmt":"2021-02-11T12:19:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=88904"},"modified":"2021-02-11T12:19:35","modified_gmt":"2021-02-11T12:19:35","slug":"roofers-material-shortages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/roofers-material-shortages\/88904\/","title":{"rendered":"Roofers concerned about material shortages, data shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>When asked to rank their top three concerns for 2021, almost half of roofing and cladding contractors (48%) put material shortages at the top of the list, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3rLM9yN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">State of the Roofing Industry Survey<\/a>, by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glenigan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glenigan<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfrc.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NFRC<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Roof tiles were the most common material shortage reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/roofing-accreditation-scheme\/82865\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">roofing contractors<\/a> in the final quarter of 2020, with almost half of firms struggling to get hold of them (49%).<\/p>\n<p>Roofers also listed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/timber-2021\/87990\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">timber<\/a> and battens (17%), slates (14%) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/tag\/insulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">insulation<\/a> (5%) as other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/plant-equipment-supplies-news\/uk-building-materials\/88182\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">materials in shortage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shortages are having a knock-on impact on material prices, with three quarters (76%) of firms reporting inflationary pressures in the last year, and two thirds (65%) of roofers saying that prices have increased even on the previous quarter.<\/p>\n<p>In spite of this, contractors experienced a positive end to 2020, with two in five roofing contractors (41%) reporting an increase in their workloads in Q4 on the previous quarter.<\/p>\n<h3>The survey found that:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Workloads were up in all roofing sectors in Q4 of 2020 with domestic repair, maintenance and improvement (RMI) performing the strongest, followed by commercial RMI and public non-residential RMI.<\/li>\n<li>All nations and regions of the UK, apart from Northern Ireland, experienced higher workloads than the previous quarter. Scotland performed best, with 80% of Scottish roofing contractors reporting higher activity levels.<\/li>\n<li>Employment levels increased on the previous quarter, with a net balance of 12% of firms reporting a higher staff count than in Q3, but this is still down 3% on the previous year.<\/li>\n<li>It is becoming harder for roofing contractors to recruit, with 45% of firms reporting that recruitment is becoming more difficult.
