Willmott Dixon<\/a> has been appointed by Stevenage Borough Council<\/a> for an \u00a38m project to build a new bus interchange as part of the town\u2019s \u00a31bn regeneration programme<\/a><\/h2>\n

The new interchange will include covered waiting facilities with extensive seating areas, toilets, caf\u00e9, live passenger information boards and greatly improved accessibility features<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The bus interchange\u2019s new location close to the mainline station will also improve routes and connections between the railway station and town centre, with new pathways linking the bus interchange, town square<\/a> and train station together to provide better connections between the cycle, bus and rail networks.<\/p>\n

The project is being accelerated by the SCAPE Construction direct award framework which drives collaboration and efficiency to deliver projects to the highest standard.<\/p>\n

Improving accessibility across the town<\/h3>\n

Chris Tredget, managing director at Willmott Dixon, said: \u201cWe\u2019re delighted to be appointed to deliver the brand-new bus interchange for Stevenage, as part of the wider regeneration works taking place in the town<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Andrew Geldard, chief communications officer, said: \u201cOnce completed it will help improve accessibility across the town, making it easy for all cyclists, bus and rail users to move around in a green and sustainable way.\u201d<\/p>\n

“We believe that transport hubs like this in Stevenage and also the one we recently built in Lincoln are set to become more prominent in town centres as they plan efficient transport use and we hope our project here acts as a template for more to follow.”<\/p>\n

Marking another major step forward<\/h3>\n

Sharon Taylor OBE, leader of Stevenage Borough Council, said: \u201cWe\u2019re very happy to see the launch of the new bus interchange development and it will mark another major step forward in the wider regeneration programme.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe past year has been exceptionally challenging, however we now have four projects underway, which is testament to the strength of our partnerships and to the resilience of everyone we\u2019re working with.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bus interchange development not only significantly improves transport links across the town and provides better and more secure facilities for bus users; it also facilitates the development of other projects, like SG1 taking place.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a really exciting time for Stevenage and we\u2019re optimistic that this development, combined with our others that are near completion, will provide the boost that people need at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The interchange was designed by the architect Stephen George & Partners<\/a> and will be ready for use by autumn 2021.<\/p>\n
