{"id":89410,"date":"2021-02-23T09:37:35","date_gmt":"2021-02-23T09:37:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=89410"},"modified":"2022-07-01T16:39:03","modified_gmt":"2022-07-01T15:39:03","slug":"transport-location-data-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/transport-location-data-2\/89410\/","title":{"rendered":"Mott MacDonald and Alchera win \u00a32m transport location data competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mottmac.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mott MacDonald<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alcheratechnologies.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alchera Technologies<\/a> have secured funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/geospatial-commission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Geospatial Commission<\/a> to help solve transport challenges using geospatial data<\/h2>\n<p>The Geospatial Commission, in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/innovate-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Innovate UK<\/a>, is funding\u00a0winners\u00a0of their \u00a32m transport location data competition which looks at how location data can spark innovation and support the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/the-uks-mobility-sector\/67357\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">future of mobility<\/a> for the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Mott MacDonald will work with technology partner Alchera Technologies on a project to build a real-time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/construction-technology-news\/data-and-digital-twins\/87975\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">digital twin<\/a> based on existing traffic models, the growing array of roadside sensors, and state-of-the-art machine learning techniques in order to be able to model traffic condition on networks in real-time.<\/p>\n<p>A digital twin of the road network will enable more effective traffic management measures and optimise use of the road network capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Alchera\u2019s cloud-based AI software, Alpha, will provide real-time data on vehicle movements around major infrastructure and will be used alongside Mott MacDonald\u2019s mesoscopic traffic modelling, meaning a real-time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/digital-twins-infrastructure\/70121\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">digital transport twin<\/a> can become a reality.<\/p>\n<p>Smarter mobility solutions, underpinned by location data, will enable users to make the most of our transport networks by boosting capacity, reducing environmental impacts and decreasing travel times.<\/p>\n<p>Phase 1 of the feasibility study aims to prove that live feeds from traffic sensor data can be automatically ingested and mapped in real-time to a virtual representation of the road network in a mesoscopic traffic model.<\/p>\n<p>In phase 2, the expectation is to have a fully operational, self-improving digital twin that will present outputs geospatially, supporting better informed operational decision making.<\/p>\n<h3>\u2018Net-zero, digital innovation and social outcomes\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Steve Canadine, managing director transportation, Mott MacDonald said: \u201cWe\u2019re delighted to be contributing to this innovative programme, which could have a transformative effect on how the UK\u2019s road capacity is used.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work builds upon our long-term development of digital twins and our support for the Centre for Digital Built Britain (CDBB).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe project also represents a perfect hybrid of our core purposes \u2013 net-zero, digital innovation and social outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The submission team included the ITD transport modelling team at Mott MacDonald; Philip Old, project principal, and principal transport modellers Martin Parretti and Tim Pollard; and Aaron Croucher and Themba Muchaneta at Alchera Technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Anna Jordan, head of operations at Alchera, added: \u201cAlchera specialises in providing real-time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/autodesk-revit-add-ins\/88718\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">digital tools<\/a> to owners &amp;
