construction workers, with 244,100 people on furlough at the end of January<\/h2>\n<p>The data, analysed by employment lawyers at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.richardnelsonllp.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Richard Nelson LLP<\/a>, found over one-third (39%) of construction employers used the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/furloughed-workers\/73922\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">furlough scheme<\/a> in January 2021, up from 33% in December last year.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2020, there were 195,100 furloughed construction workers, the third national lockdown has meant a steep increase in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/spring-budget-2021-predictions\/89589\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">figures for the construction industry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When comparing the construction sector to other industries, Richard Nelson LLP found the percentage of furloughed employees in the construction industry has increased more than both the manufacturing and transport sectors this year.<\/p>\n<h3>Easing anxiety and uncertainty<\/h3>\n<p>Jayne Harrison, head of employment law at Richard Nelson LLP, said: \u201cThe construction industry has been advised by the government to continue operating as normal, with the necessary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/covid-19-construction-guide\/86633\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Covid-secure measures<\/a> in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor workers who cannot return to their job role or who are not currently needed because of reduced demand, the furlough scheme has kept them employed and meant they are not adding to rising unemployment in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are expecting for the furlough scheme to be extended today with the announcement of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/budget-2021\/89849\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chancellor&#8217;s budget<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor construction firms, this will help to ease the anxiety and uncertainty over the next few months and allow for companies to plan better for the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe predict that as lockdown continues to ease, these figures will begin to decline as more workers are needed back in at their posts.\u201d<\/p>\n<div
