encouraged to consider a career with HS2<\/h2>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/employmentandlabourmarket\/peoplenotinwork\/unemployment\/timeseries\/mgsz\/lms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ONS data<\/a>, female unemployment rates have risen month on month since the period January \u2013 March 2020, and currently stand at 4.8% for the period October \u2013 December 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The ONS\u2019 latest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/employmentandlabourmarket\/peopleinwork\/employmentandemployeetypes\/bulletins\/uklabourmarket\/february2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Labour Market Overview, UK February 2021<\/a>\u00a0shows that the number of\u00a0job\u00a0vacancies\u00a0in November 2020 to January 2021 was 26% lower than a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>With over 20,000 roles still to be created through the construction of Britain\u2019s new railway, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/phase-2a-of-hs2-to-crewe\/88935\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">extends from London to Crewe<\/a>, HS2 is striving to redress the gender imbalance inherent in the construction and rail engineering sectors.<\/p>\n<p>To date, it has exceeded industry benchmarks set for the percentage of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/racial-equality-workplace\/79690\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Black and Ethnically Diverse<\/a>, disabled and female employees that make up its workforce.<\/p>\n<p>The sheer scale of the work required to deliver HS2, which is integral to the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/build-back-better-council\/87614\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Build Back Better strategy<\/a>, has enabled it to buck that trend, with both HS2 Ltd and its supply chain partners spearheading major recruitment campaigns for both office and site-based job opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hs2.org.uk\/careers\/careers-with-our-supply-chain\/jobs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">150\u00a0live vacancies<\/a> within HS2\u2019s supply chain\u00a0and HS2 Ltd is continuing to expand its own workforce, reflecting progress to date in constructing the first phase of the railway and the recent green light for its extension to Crewe.<\/p>\n<h3>Striving for change<\/h3>\n<p>Maria Grazia Zedda, senior equality diversity and inclusion manager at HS2 Ltd said: \u201cIndustries like construction
